In 1996 Notre Dame finished 8-3 and refused bowl bids. They sort of made that decision look silly the next year, however, when they finished the regular season 7-5 and accepted a bid to the Weedeater Bowl in Shreveport.
Is firing assistant coaches the path to success? I dunno. Tommy Bowden has been running an assistant coach carousel over at Clem(p)son, and here is the result:
