A BC opinion on CPJ

Luck is what happens when opportunity meets preparation. We were prepared fo the flukes and used them to our advantage. This was a fairly typical first game with some of the usual opportunities for improvement.

So we were better than a 10 win FSU last year? That doesn't make sense. There are fluke plays in football such that the truly better team does not win. There are coaching decisions like kicking a long field goal that make a difference in a game. Or putting a crappy kicker in to try a field goal. What I saw up front is bothersome. You can't rely on outcoaching the other team over the long term, you have to win on the line of scrimmage.

For one game we were better. Call it a fluke play. Call it whatever you want. FSU for all their talent and coaching put themselves in a position to lose. They lost. Everett Golson threw his first pick of the year against us. We held Dalvin Cook to his second lowest rush total of the year. Were we the better team all year? Hell no. But we were that Saturday. I don't think we played well this past Saturday. I have plenty of concerns about our team, but our team was better than BC Saturday.

Yeah, I think everyone tends to overreact to the first 3-4 weeks of a season. No team is a finished product early in the season with the roster turnover inherent in college football and the lack of preseason games. Young guys are learning what it is to play at this level and even upper classmen are settling into larger roles than they ever had to play in the past. That's especially true of Tech with the amount of youth in the lineup and the timing needed to run Johnson's offense. So, early in the year, you just want to survive and advance week to week so that by the time you hit the 4th or 5th week you're still in the running to have a special campaign.

A couple of years ago I had a co-worker who was a UGA fan spouting his genius opinion that Tech fans should've been upset that Tech pulled out the Georgia Southern win because a loss in that game would've potentially gotten Coach Johnson fired by year's end. I told him that he was clearly the kind of stupid that just doesn't wash off, and why on earth would it be preferable to not be undefeated with everything left to play for? Then Tech squeaked past Virginia Tech and they were on their way to being a top-10 team. Just stay alive and keep improving week over week and you can have a special year.

That I can agree with. I'll take an ugly win over a pretty loss, but you can't do that all season.

Dude you sound like the world's biggest bitch

BC was several games last year because their D is legit. ND and FSU come to mind. Also they did so with a HORRIBLE offense that had several injuries. They are healthier this year and while they won't be a good offense they will be in the 70-90 range compared to 124 or whatever they were last year. Combine that with their D and that BC team is going to win atleast 7 games. Be happy we won and yes we have several things to improve but this GT team is not the 2015 version.
So you are prognosticating that they will win all four of their weak OOC games and beat Syracuse and Wake. That means they have to win one of Louisville, NC State, Virginia Tech, FSU, or Clemson. I don't see that. Their offense and kicker are bad. Someone will beat them that you don't expect.

Their schedule out of conference is epically bad. They are the reason the ACC is being ordered to add two P5 teams to their schedules. Who wants to watch them play Wagner, Buffalo, UMass, and UConn?

By the time we get to the end of the year interim events will have overwhelmed any aspect of this game.

We won and nobody got hurt. I worry about whether we really suck or not when we lose.

Agree, but fixed.

I'll be honest, I quit reading the thead when jf77 told gt1992 this:

Stop being obtuse.

...because everything after about page 1 is basically just the "1992 tries to be obtuse in different ways game." And I seem to recall having read that thread before.

It wasn't pretty, but we won. Half the freaking SEC lost this weekend, many to weaker opponents. Shit happens, and one game is not indicative of an entire season. Remember how we started 2014 slow and were going to struggle? And we obliterated our first two opponents in 2015 and were going to be some type of juggernaut? Yeah, it doesn't work like that.

I'm waiting patiently for the game tonight to be over before evaluating the SEC'S horrendous opening weekend.

We only had the one fumble, right? And that was from Mills getting popped and going inert for a second. We didn't have any of the classic pitches to no one or stonehands or any of the other whimsical triple-option prizes. And it was a rainy, miserable day. I see that as a pretty positive sign. I'm hopefully that our offense looked stuck in the mud because it effectively was and because we always look wobbly on the first week of the season.

But our perimeter blocking wasn't my favorite.

This is a very good point, and partially why I think CPJ didn't run any reverses or many TO plays. I think a lot of the gives were called in the huddle but hard to tell when he said we had a lot of misreads. If true and we were running plays with pre/destined ball carriers, I can better see why we struggled. I still feel like the lack of blocking adjustments was a poor decision but maybe he just didn't think our OL could handle base blocking against BC

Also few penalties, I think no false starts. A lot of missed assignments and several busted plays, though. Good and bad.

He sucked and kicked it low. The two kicks he missed, Butker would have made and kicked it high enough not to be blocked. Too bad the Jackets couldn't block the Pitt kicker. It is not reliable.

Your avatar fits you.

They were in the same defense as 3rd and 19. We also hit a big pass on the previous drive and had pass interference called to give us a first down. None of which relate to our base offense that wasn't working the vast majority of the day. I'm all for opening the offense up, but let's go get Ralph back to do that as OC. We won and that's good, but I simply didn't see a blueprint for consistent winning.

Agreed that our efforts vs BC don't constitute a blueprint for winning. B-Back Dive never worked nor did running outside. Only because we completed some clutch passes down the stretch...plus that we were playing probably the worst offense we'll play all year...did we win that game. We can't have a non-existent ground game in an option-based offense and expect to win very often.

The B-back dive was working on the one drive where Tech had the fumble.
