A question about coaching changes

With Richt being fired can players transfer without sitting out for a year.

Yes, I think so.

Don't bet your house on it, but when Johnson came Colin Peek transferred to Alabama and played immediately, IIRC.

Edit: Whoops! hope you didn't bet the house - from Wiki:

Following the 2007 season, Chan Gailey was fired as Tech's head coach. When Paul Johnson was hired as the new coach for the Yellow Jackets, Peek knew his role in Johnson's triple option flexbone offense would be limited. He decided to transfer to Alabama who had just finished 7-6 in their first year under Nick Saban.

Peek was forced to sit out the 2008 season due to the NCAA transfer rule. He was eligible to play in the 2009 Sugar Bowl, but he had to miss the game due to an injured foot.[1]

Should be able to leave whenever you öööö well please and play the next season.

That's the larger issue. I'm just saying a coach getting fired is no reason to waive the rule.

Bad idea, then recruiting would take over the entire game

Not if you aren't allowed to recruit a player while he is playing somewhere else. Kid can leave, find a spot, and play the next season. Any fiddling with a player on someone's roster without permission is an immediate post season ban. BOOM

The more I think about it, the issue is not other coaches' recruiting but lesser programs becoming tryouts. Saban doesn't have to recruit a good freshman from a lesser school for that kid to transfer.

an entire segment of colleges effectively become JUCO's feeding the factories all of their upperclassmen.

should commit to the school, not the coach.

Then eliminate athletic scholarships altogether. The head coach is part of the school they commit to and they're being granted free admission to the school because of their athletic ability. Should Peek have stayed with us in 2008 after his position was eliminated entirely, just because he committed to Georgia Tech, not to being a tight end?
