The insane world of college sports, football in particular, needs to figure out its ultimate goal. Right now there seems to be no end game in sight, so we keep making stupid decisions like adding Oklahoma to the SEC, which means they have to play softball/baseball or run cross country against Florida. That is stupid.
I wish we had quit expanding conferences a long time ago. But, since that train left the station a long time ago, I would suggest.
1. Create a super level for football with its own governing body. I like the idea of two conferences, the SEC football conference and the Rose Bowl football conference. They can grow to whatever size they want. They can drop out teams that do not compete well if they choose (a sort of relegation system). They have their own playoff system in each conference. They can use existing bowls in their playoffs as they choose. Their Super Bowl would pit the champions of the two conferences. I could see this being as small as 48 super football programs and as large as 70. It just depends on who wants to ante up.
2. Those left out have their own governing group, form football only conferences, package their TV deals, create their own playoff/bowl system. Drop scholarships down to 65 in this division, so many of the schools in the existing playoff division would participate.
3. We then create conferences that make sense for all of the remaining sports - schools close by of similar competive position to minimize travel costs. The NCAA can market these championships and sell national TV rights. Basketball is the money maker for these conferences.
4. Back to football, the season starts after Labor Day. The super group and the lower group play 12 games only against teams from their level. In late August and early September up to Labor Day, each school can play two exhibitions of their choice against any school they choose. Here is the only time the super group and lower group can play one another. With this schedule the seasons would end the first week of December and playoffs could be on the 2nd and 3 rd weeks. Quarterfinals could be “Bowl week” at New Years. Semi-finals and championship take you to mid-January. It is a lot of football, but it gives more chances to make money through tickets and TV. In the world of NIL athletes are paid to play anyway, and frankly they would prefer exhibition games to pre-season drills and playoff games to off season conditioning.
The conference bureaucrats would hate this, but it would be good for everyone else. Georgia Tech would either ante up to compete at the big league level or learn to play for a championship at the second level. It would change some of the conference network TV deals, but the change could be for the better.
