ACC designated rival

I actually enjoy playing Clemson every year precisely because it is a friendly rivalry with no real hate. Back when I lived in the south I looked forward to going up to Clemson every other year just as much as I looked forward to GT home games.

Same here. I have a long-time friend who lives in Anderson, a Clemson alum -I go up for the game every other year and he comes down every other year. His tailgate group are always friendly and hospitable, his seats are great -and behind the visitors bench. It's a fun trip that I always look forward to.

It wouldn't. But the proposal wasn't just that, it was about ending the designated rivalry spot too. That would mean no more UNC-NC State, or Duke-Wake. Presumably many of their fans would be upset about that, just like many of ours would be upset if we didn't get to play Clemson every year.

Consideration of upsetting the Duke-Wake fan base kind of makes me chuckle. How many fans are we talking about with this one? The attendance at that historic rivalry last year was 21,077 reported (actual butts in seats was likely lower).

If the conference is seriously letting that game strongly influence decision making then no wonder the scheduling is so screwed.

Nobody made that argument. It's just one part of the argument that there are some fixed opponents that should always play every year and accommodating all of those games requires fixed opponents.

Who gives a öööö that VPI plays BC every year. This constant tinkering to try to make schedules balanced is what causes problems.

Boohoo we have to play Clemson every year. This thread is dumb.

Clemson to coastal, Miami to Atlantic
I agree with this, but I would take it a step further. Put all former Big East schools in the Atlantic.
Clemson to coastal, Miami to Atlantic
F$U to Coastal, VT to Atlantic
NC State to Coastal, Pitt to Atlantic

This makes the most sense geographically, while preserving the natural rivalries.

Atlantic.........................Coastal
Miami(FL)............................F$U
Louisville..............................Clemson
Pitt........................................GT
VT.........................................Virginia
BC.........................................UNC
Syracuse...............................NC State
Wake Forest.........................Duke

This is a great idea. Let Wake Forest play two of the three NC schools each year. Let the two FL and the two VA schools play each other every year. Rotate everyome else.

How does this make sense geographically for Miami? Not that this matters to anything.

I dunno about all this, but I absolutely think we should play Clemson every year in any scenario.

I like playing Clemson. I understand that it puts us at a disadvantage relative to some of the other teams in the Coastal, but it is always one of the more anticipated and fun games every year. Beating Clemson is a thrill and until very recently we were basically winning every other year against them. I wouldn't change it. I cannot remember a Tech team over the past 10 seasons that I thought was deserving of an ACC Championship bid that didn't get one b/c this game was on the schedule.

...Last year we would have lost the tie breaker with so many coastal losses (UNC, Pitt, Miami) even if we finished 5-3 with a win over a Clemson replacement.

Every other year? We owned them there for a stretch. We were 6-1 against them from '04-'09. Only win was that night game at their place in '06 where we decided to put Calvin in the backfield.

Even during the Dabo revival, CPJ is 5-5 against Clemmons.

We're 12-9 against them since 1996 and 50-29-2 all-time. No reason to shy away from this series at all.

In 2013, if we'd played wake instead of clemson, we'd have been 6-2 instead of 5-3 and gone to the championship game over Duke (where we would have gotten pasted by the eventual national champ florida state). We would have had three straight coastal titles from 2012-2014.

On the other hand, if we don't play clemson in 2014, we probably don't make the orange bowl.

Clemson from even 3 years ago to now is a completely different animal. Dabo's got that thing at a crazy level. I hate to say it, but we're gonna take it on the chin for the foreseeable future against those guys.

Never know when their QB might get hurt early in the game and backup throw some gifts.

Miami is so far away from all the other ACC schools geographically that they have to fly to everyone of them. Therefore, they should be in the Atlantic(North) with all the other former Big East schools.

I've got a pretty clear memory that Miami/FSU were put into opposite divisions because the ACC thought they'd be a ratings bonanza in the ACCCG. They thought that would give them a good chance of getting two blockbuster matchups in one year. (BTW, aside from 2009, has the ACCCG ever been a rematch?) One loss out-of-division don't matter since you'd have the tiebreaker with all the division teams you beat.

The ACCCG has been a rematch 4 times (out of 12 years). Some interesting facts:
1. It was a rematch 3 years in a row, 2007-2009.
2. It hasn't been a rematch since 2011, 5 straight games without one.
3. 2007 - VT over BC, 2008 - VT over BC, 2009 - GT over Clemson, 2011 - Clemson over VT.
4. The first two rematches saw the winner during the regular season lose the ACCCG (BC both times).
5. The last two rematches saw the regular season winner get their second win against the same team (GT and Clemson).
