Perhaps some of you older folks can enlighten me.
What was the motive behind the foundation of the ACC. I see the charter members left the southern conference which had long since lost members to form the See Everyone Cheats Conference.
But what were the reasons, I've read that it was a football promoted move, and that Basketball dominance was a coincidence.

The Southern conference attempted to stop Maryland and another founding ACC member (can't recall which one) from accepting a bowl bid and that was the catalyst for the split.
