Ahh Saban took the lead.!

The fan vote selects the 25 semifinalists, and then their committee narrows down to the top 10. Then there's another round of fan voting for the winner, which is used with the committee's votes and media voting.

I have a question. Who does the committee consist of? Is it sports writers, or coaches, or who?

In today's write up by Barnhart in the AJC, he states:

"Alabama is a very good football team and Nick Saban should be the national coach of the year for what he has done with this team. He and his staff have gotten every ounce of production out of Alabama’s talent."

It shouldn't surprise me too much because Tony is a big SEC and UGA homer, but in all fairness, I've felt like he's been a pretty big Paul Johnson (and GT for that matter) fan this year and would vote for Johnson as national COY. You can't take anything away from Saban. Yes, he's a snake in the grass, but one can't argue that he's not a damn good football coach. Alabama, by all estimates, was supposed to be one year away form this type of run, and now they're sitting pretty at consensus No. 1 and playing for a shot at a national title this weekend. However, with the SEC being a lot worse this year (save UA and UF) than any could imagine, not sure how that bodes for this argument. In contrast, here's Johnson at little old GT, who nobody thought (outside of GT) would win more than 3 games, who has taken the ACC by storm, which is a much better conference than it first appeared in August.

Any logical fan outside of GT and Alabama should be able to look at the collective body of work and see that Paul Johnson's accomplishments at GT are nothing short of amazing this year considering where he started. Why then, do I think that Johnson's gonna get screwed over by the committee, just like Derrick Morgan and Morgan Burnette. Hopefully, I'm wrong. In any case, we all know the truth.

Did you all here.....Roddy Jones just scored another TD in Athens! :laugher:

PJ ahead at the time of this post.

Paul Johnson took a team that went 7-6 last year and went 9-3 in his first year, also ending a losing streak to his in-state rival. That is great, and far beyond expectations. Nick Saban took over a team that went 6-7 two years ago, and in his second year has them undefeated and the consensus #1, with the chance for three top 10 victories, including a victory over what was supposed to be the ACC's best team on a neutral site. He snapped a six-game losing streak to their in-state rival. He also beat the preseason #1(#3 at the time) in Athens and has a chance to knock off the favorite for the national title on a neutral field. That is beyond anyone's wildest expectations. If he beats Florida, he deserves Coach of the Year.

Hey, gth816f, you'll get no argument with me there. What Nick Saban has done this year at Alabama is very impressive. Unlike many of the posters, I actually like Alabama and follow them on a regular basis. I grew up rooting for them as a kid, and my brother actually went to school there and I was able to go to several games with him in Tuscaloosa. The atmosphere is amazing! Believe it our not, I actually had a ticket to go to tomorrow's SEC championship game with my brother, but I've got to work. Dammit!

What I am saying is this. Nick Saban is a household name and every high school prospect that dreams of playing at the next level has heard of him. The University of Alabama has a recruting budget that would rival some small countries' GDP and their resources are unlimited. And even though Alabama has had a decade of mediocrity prior to this year, many high school kids, especially from the southeast, dream of playing in Bryant Denny Stadium among the legends of Bear Bryant, Joe Namath, etc. To me, it isn't beyond my wildest expectations though. After all that's why Saban was brought to U of A and why he's being payed $ 4 million/ yr. He's overachieved in his second year yes, but I'm not very surprised. He's a hell of a coach!

I guess I'm trying to say this. Even though Paul Johnson came to GT with much fanfare from the GT faithful, outside of our community, nothing much was expected from his first year by anyone considered "in the know". SI for goodness sake had us ranked 81st and picked to finish 4th in our division and next to last in the ACC this year I beleive. Not only did he have to perform a total 180 in regards to scheme and strategy, but perhaps more importantly, mindset. No, our cupboards weren't bare, but all I'm saying is that Paul Johnson did more with a whole hell of a lot less....and in his first year, none-the-less.

Now if (and that's a big if) Alabama upsets Florida this weekend, then maybe Saban does deserve the national COY award. No one is a hotter team than UF. I actually feel the game will be much closer than the "experts" think, especially with Harvin maybe being out. I think I heard today the spread is 9.5. If I had some spare money laying around, I'd take those odds.

I admit, I have a little bit of a man-crush on PJ :laugher:, and especially with GT football, but even if I was an impartial observer, I'd have to still vote for Johnson.

PJ is still ahead at the time of this post. :D

WTF!?

I swear this morning it said 10 hours left...and now that that's up it says 23 hours?

F* it, keep voting!

Yeah, it was apparently extended. I saw this yesterday on another board. Might it be because of another little game today that has yet to be played?

I agree, keep voting. No doubt that Johnson will make the committee's top 25 cut, but after that........
