AJC Player of the Year

Joe Burns

It was Byerly. From his RR.com bio...

High School: Named the Atlanta Journal Constitution's All-Classification Player of the Year and first team all-state...

The reason he's not listed in the article is because the caveat is "signed with GT," and Byerly signed with MTSU out of HS.

If JT5 starts to struggle or shows some fatigue, I hope CPJ will change of pace with Byerly. Tim has substituted seamlessly and will cause a different look and feel of our offense to State. Gives JT5 opportunity to settle down and observe what is happening on the field with CPJ at his side making comments and coaching up.

State seems to have a weak pass defense which we need to probe early.

I hope hope their QB doesn't eat us up like the UNC QB did.

Our defense seems like it turned the corner after the UNC game, mostly by forcing more turnovers. Prescott will probably eat us up anyway, but we might get a few stops that we wouldn't have gotten earlier in the season. I'm expecting a shootout, so the team that gets a couple TO's and forces a couple punts will win, just like the UGag and FSU games. On offense, we need to get to their secondary for some big plays, so grinding it out with Byerly probably would not be the best adjustment. Unfortunately, not having Smelter is a big difference maker, but maybe Waller and the ABs can surprise them.

We are gonna kick Mississippi State's ass.

Amazing that the AJC's best player of the year would go to MTSU. No doubt he was too small or too slow, right? I hate it when CFB is just NFL-lite.

I believe last years AJC POY signed with KSU.

Looking forward to seeing AJ on the flats.

That's pretty silly. Look, Byerly is a competent backup but he's not a gamebreaker. JT is the best QB we've had here for this system under CPJ - Byerly is many rungs down on that list. He showed a few good throws against Duke but that was such a small sample size and they weren't ready for that (re: small sample size - anyone remember how Taylor Bennett was the "savior" when he subbed for Reggie in the bowl game?). I think taking JT out would be a terrible idea unless he gets hurt.
