We always hear from UGA/SEC people how great Munson was (and he was good and entertaining), but Big Al was a classic too.

I remember some of his classic lines:
"Kim King on the bark, they split the right end"
"The bunny is up....and in"
"Throwing long....the man is THERE!"
"He is stacked up"
And of course "Toe meets leather"

What are some other good stories?

In his later, not as sharp years:

"Jerry Mays takes the handoff and gets tackled for...yardage"...

Yep, there was a good bit of that in the later years:
"The kick is high enough and long enough.....short and wide to the left"

Man... I've only gotten a couple of those. The '84 game I think. I'm hoping to find more one of these days.

I remember a game, I think against tennessee but not at all sure, when Lavette got hurt and was in street clothes on the sideline the 2nd half.

AC - "Lavette takes the handoff for a 2 yard gain."
AC 4 seconds later - "the complexion of this game really changed when Lavette went down and could not return to action!"
AC 10 seconds later - "Lavette takes a pitch to the far side and fights for 5 yards. This youngster really hustles!"

And so it went with AC calling out Robert's name and a few seconds later talking about how he was on the sideline with an injury. You could just hear Kim grimacing without saying anything. Every now and then Kim could be heard trying to paint the real picture with "you know Al....." before Al would break back in.

A friend finally leaned over to me and said, "I wonder if it would help if he tried to run without those Florsheim tassel loafers on?" Flask, please.

R.I.P. Al.

I remember on numerous plays where there was a flag, Al would say: "marker on the play!, gonna be offsides on Carolina" and Kim would say "no Al, thats gonna be holding on Tech", etc.

Ah haha. That's funny. You're funny!

But seriously, that sounds like me and my dad every time we watch a game together. I can only imagine hearing that on a broadcast.

Or better yet, Al said once "there's a flag," and Kim answered back, "I think that's a leaf, Al."
My favorite is still "Yvon Joseph, the 6-10 senior center from Haiti, Georgia" before a game.

Even with the foibles, Al was great. He lived and breathed Tech, as did the Left-hander, Kim King. At least with Al, you got the score of the game every once in a while. I once listened to a Georgia game on my way to Statesboro for a GSU game and I got 2 minutes of dead air with Munson. A full two minutes. Mikes were on and working. There was a stoppage for an injury or some such and Munson just sat there, probably refilling his shot glass.

"He's at the 30..the 35...the 40..the 45 ...HE'S AT THE 50..THE 45!..HE'S AT THE 40!, THE 35!, HE'S AT THE 30!!, THE 25!!, HE'S AT THE 20!!, HE'S AT THE 15!!!, 10,5,4,3,2,1! TOUCHDOWN! GEORGIA TECH!!"

"There's a pass over the middle...INTERCEPTED......and dropped."

As a kid AL was my connection to Tech, since games were not on TV. I couldn't wait each week to listen to him do the games.

Those were the days when you either went to the game or listened on the radio. Sadly, the radio announcers today have very little style or personality. We punted and threw many a football on Saturday afternoons listening to Big Al.

In his prime Al was at his best calling basketball. As a kid I would voluntarily go to bed earlier to hear Al call a Tech game that usually tipped off at 8. I would listen to WGST and could easily visualize the action as Al called the game. "tossing in the range finders" "a lot of iron, but good" "the bunny is up and in" "brothers and sisters, we've got a thriller brewing". It was a real treat to hear him.

Good call there. I remember the same stuff...."he shoots the one and one...the first of two is in the air.....GOOT....he draws the bonus", "sickback, no good, rebounded by Yunkus, who clears the glass"
