Well I have not seen too many reports on the scrimmage from yesterday so I thought I would pass along a few of my observations. It was a nice day with the sun breaking through early. A little cool with a wind blowing pretty steady, just enough to keep the chill on the fans. I decided to move over into the end zone area in the sun to stay a little warmer. It clouded up a little later and pretty much stayed cool the whole scrimmage. I am sure the players enjoyed the cooler weather. To be honest I did not see a lot of passion out there yesterday morning. It seemed like a lot of the guys were just going through the motions. Maybe they were a little worn out from practicing as much as they have been. Even the coaches seemed to lack the fire you normally see out of them. There were a few noteworthy performances and here is what I saw.
On the offensive side of the ball, the line seemed to do OK. They opened a few holes and gave the QB enough time to get the ball out for the most part. The left side of the line seemed to be playing a bit better than the right. Most of the big plays were broke over the left side of the line. It looks like Sellers is going to be a pretty decent tackle if we need help there down the road. Barrick, Uzzi, Gilbert and Bedford all had decent days. The subs came in and did OK as well, Smith, McRae, Minter, Johnson, Fraysier and Krish all seemed to hold up well.
Josh was looking pretty good until he got his shoulder hurt. I know Josh is a tough guy but he sure gets hurt a lot. Hopefully he will make it back for the Spring Game. It was really the Jaybo show yesterday. He moved the team well and made several tough runs. I was glad he did not get hurt as well; he still takes a lot of punishment and tends to run too straight up. Tevin did OK and made one really nice run for a touchdown. He needs to get a lot of work before next season and I hope the coaches really make that happen.
The A backs had a few shining moments. Allen made a couple of nice runs and it appears the coaches are really trying to settle AA into the A back slot. Roddy made a couple of nice runs but the toughest runs of the day from the A back position were turned in by Marcus Wright. He runs really hard and delivers a blow when he meets the opposition. The B Backs were led by Richard Watson and Preston Lyons. Both these guys are very good and showed some good moves and power. Dwyer really only made a token appearance and despite what was reported by some media outlets, Lucas Cox did not participate due to an injury. I think Cox is being slotted to the B Back role and will compete with Watson for second team after Dwyer. We just have too much depth for Lyons to hope for a lot of meaningful playing time unless we have a lot of injuries at that position. He is good enough to play and could start for a lot of D1 football teams.
The ends did not really dazzle today. Bay Bay was the best as usual and made some excellent blocks as usual. Melton did not play. The other receivers did not really do much.
On Defense, I did not see the fire out of that group I had been seeing earlier this spring. I think Jefferson had his clock cleaned by Bay Bay and decided to keep his mouth shut the rest of the day. Sedric made some nice plays. Morgan Burnett was his usual outstanding self and was in on a lot of plays as was Dominique Reese. Reese was probably one of the best performers in the scrimmage overall. The front four played fairly good and stuffed most of the inside stuff. One guy that continues to catch my eye is number 41, Egbuniwe, he was around the ball a lot and was talking some smack. He is going to challenge Hall for the other starting DE position. Of course D. Morgan seems to have a lock on the other one; however he really did not distinguish himself in the scrimmage. A couple of other guys that were in on a lot of plays when they were in there were Malcolm Munroe and Rashaad Reid. Tarrant, Butler, Peters and Anderson also made a few plays.
Overall, it was little too laid back for my liking but then again maybe the Coaches are reigning them in a bit to build to a big crescendo next Saturday. I think there are some opportunities for some of the younger guys to stake a claim to more playing time but they need to really bring it next weekend if they want to move toward realizing that objective.
