Are PJ and Wommack an UPGRADE from Gailey and Tenuta?

It is pure speculation and in reality we will never know because we don't know how good Tech would have been now that we can have 85 scholarships. Furthermore, it wasn't until 2006 that Chan got his recruiting situation humming. Finally, would Renfree, Jackson and Jenkins have filled the passing game gap in our offense? Who knows? We will never know.

There are some questions yet to be answered by the new regime. Can they recruit? Will their type of offense be successful in the ACC/BCS? Will we miss Tenuta's defense? It's great to be excited and optimistic, but the questions still must be answered.

One thing is not speculation...it is really going to cost us to find out if we have an upgrade. Not only are we paying for Chan for four more years, we are also paying more for the new coach than the old one.

One more thing is not speculation. The fan base is becoming energized with great expectations. I hope these expectations eventually become realized and that the fans will have enough patience to allow the new coach to build his program to completion.

I would say "no", although not necessarily a downgrade. Johnson has more college coaching success than Gailey had at the time of his hiring. But, Gailey had NFL head coaching and offense coordinating experience. I would say that at the time of their hiring both looked like good choices for a different set of reasons. Neither were great hires - the hiring of a coach who has competed for championships and been very successful at a BCS school for an extended period. Bobby Ross, with his ACC championships won at Maryland was probably the best hire coming in we have had in recent years.

As for our Defensive Coordinator, Tenuta was revered for what he had accomplished in Chapel Hill and has been considered an elite coach throughout his tenure at Tech. How could you hire anyone in the college ranks and consider it an upgrade? Again, I think Tenuta was gone if we were not willing to give him the job. I think we have made a good hire, but not an upgrade.

Now, I just wish the new regime nothing but great success with strong support.

Just one little correction, but Tenuta was NOT revered for his results at UNC. Carolina has a history of great defensive teams and he was seen as another decent DC, albeit one who couldn't/wouldn't recruit.

Don't know much about Wommack but PJ will hold him to high standards or he'll be gone. As for PJ, his offensive wizardry is unquestioned and his record speaks for itself. He has a lot of Georgia contacts when it comes to recruiting and knows what talent works within his system . He will relate his confidence to potential recruits giving them a good impression. As a long time follower of PJ let me say Tech is in very good hands. I foresee ACC Championships down the road.
