Are we better off?

I'm going to get hammered for this. I'm aware. There are people on here who won't even consider what I'm about to say. This isn't a "Fire Paul Johnson" thread. I've defended Paul Johnson the last couple of years and I had a lot of confidence in his ability to take us to the next level. This is just something I've been thinking about and I think it could make for a good discussion.

If Chan Gailey was our coach right now would we be a better football program? I think it is a legit question. I know people are going to come back with "PJ won the ACC and Chan never beat UGA. Hear me out before you stop reading.

Chan was not a great recruiter. His classes from 2002-2006 were not overly impressive, even though we had several All-Conference and All-American performers. In 2007, he put together a stellar class. Those guys are the reason we beat UGA in 08 and won the ACC in 09 and PJ did a good job of coaching those years.

During the Chan era, it seemed like our problem, personnel wise, was the QB position. Our defense was pretty good and kept us in a lot of games, our offensive line was solid most years, we cranked out productive RB's every single year (Hollings, Daniels, Choice) and we had a guy named Calvin Johnson followed by Demaryius Thomas. We even had really good kickers and punters. However, we won 7 games a year and we were anemic on offense. It seemed like we were really good in every aspect except for the QB position for 6 years.

Chan was putting together another solid class in 2008. That class included Sean Renfree, who was a 4 star recruit and ranked the #10 QB in the class of 2008. Renfree has been pretty good at Duke considering their talent. It seemed like we finally had a competent QB on the roster and it looked like we were going to have our second really good recruiting class in a row.

We all know what happened.

If we would have kept Chan around and stayed the course, with our recruiting trending upward and a couple of talented QB's on the roster, would we be in a better position than we are right now?

Record wise we might be in a better place cause we would finish 7-5 but program wise we would likely be worse because of fan apathy towards CCG. You think the frustration with and booing at tevin were bad? That would be nothing compared to the booing for gailey.

I don't think he would have reached the level of success we had in 08-09 but I also think we wouldn't have been as bad as we are this year.

Chan's potential would still be lacking even with great talent. See what he accomplished with great defensive talent, Tashard Choice and Calvin Johnson.

you say he wasnt a great recruiter, yet we had calvin, pj, tashard, dwyer, peek, thomas, wheeler, guyton, burnett, michael johnson... should i continue? he could recruit, he was just stubborn with the qb and didnt have great play calling.

I support this notion and have for a while. Not only would we have had a more legit QB, the rest of our offense would have been stacked. Dwyer RB, Cox FB, Jones scatback/slotback, Nesbitt Wildcat, Peek TE, J. Johnson WR, and B. Thomas WR. With that offense, you've arguably got a much, much better O than the -------y TO.

and we'd still have gone 7-5

It's better than the 3 or 4 win season we are about to have this season and better than the 6-7 we had last year

Agreed. Without Gailey's guys, we've definitely been worse and haven't won a bowl. I don't see how someone can state Gailey wouldn't have won in '09 with a better O.

Better off this particular season? Probably. Better off long-term or the past several seasons? I don't think so.

However, I do have to say that I've come around to Dave Braine's view of the program. When he made his comment originally it made my blood boil, but now I'm a few years older and a few months wiser and I kind of see his point.

We were going 7-5 with awful QB play. So with improved QB play we don't do better?

Chan's next QB was Nesbitt. I love the guy, but can you imagine him in a drop back and pass offense?

thats what he did in hs

When he threw the ball at GT it did not look like his strength. He was a bad-ass, a winner, a guy I loved to watch play, but he didn't look like a college level passer.

it might have been different if he had been working on it most of the time in practice and improved his footwork and release. he didnt really get many reps to get there in gametime in the TO now did he

Chan wouldn't start a guy just because he had more experience. Renfree could have started as a true freshman. We were on our way to our 2nd straight really good recruiting class in a row. What if Chan would have put together 3 or 4 more top 25-30 classes?

What do pre-Chan and post Chan eras have in common? Academic snobbery (even more so now).

Change the offense , change the defense, change the coaches, and you'll still have more of what you saw Saturday as long as we fish in a small recruiting pond.

Does anyone here believe Jemea Thomas and Orwin Smith actually receive different/better coaching than the rest of the team?

Chan started true Freshman Reggie Ball over Senior AJ Suggs. And I'm glad that he did. If I had to watch another season with AJ at the helm I would have screamed.

I thought the same thing about TW at the end of last season, but it wore off over time. My best GT buddy told me in the summer that he wasn't going to really get in to this season since TW was still the starter. He said he saw everything he needed to know last season. The guy hasn't talked about GT football all season. Hard to believe since he is a GT grad. I guess I should have listened.

I guess I was just a sucker.

Because Renfree started for Cutcliffe as a true freshman?

I said he could have. Did I say he was a shoe in to start?

Duke had a pretty good QB at the time. Thad Lewis put up good numbers for Duke. Their QB position was much better than ours in 2007 and 2008 if Chan was our coach.
