PJ on our defense: "We have to be accountable as coaches when [the players] look like they don't know what in the hell they're doing. There's a medium in there and you have to find it."

"What I want to do is find something where our guys can play fast," Johnson said. "Watch Virginia Tech play defense ... those jokers are playing fast now. And they're playing physical. And there's nobody standing around looking and trying to figure out what's going on, I can assure you of that. They know what they're supposed to be doing. That's where we need to get."

I watched the replay (only the first half) of the VT vs. BC game yesterday. Their defense is unbelievable. I saw some people saying that they aren't as good as they used to be. Um, you must have not watched the VT vs. BC game. They are skilled. The defense is the life blood of that team. They fly around much akin to NFL defenses.

Statistically they may not be a top 10 defense, but if you watch them on the field, you would see that they are easily one of the top 5 defenses in this country. The speed, instinct, and precision is actually frightening. I sure as heck wouldn't want to be playing offense against them.

I just hope that their flying around will cause them to over-pursue. I doubt it though. Their speed is very controlled. If you haven't seen the VT vs. BC game, find a way to watch it. If we do win this game on Saturday, we should go undefeated. That's how good they are.

Yeah, but how can you get around the fact that they let Duke march up and down the field all day to the tune of almost 400 yards? That they just weren't trying too hard? Taking the day off? Duke's offense and QB deserve some credit, but thery're not good enough to put up numbers like that on a great defense, are they?

VT has a great defense. A big part of their poor showing has been that their offense didn't have a clue to start the year. If your offense is out there going three and out, it give the other team that many more opportunities to find your weak point on defense.

VT's defense isn't as good as they used to be. And that's not a knock on the D, but some of the past VT defenses have been lights out.

Our offense has been playing lights out the past few games. It is going to be a great matchup. It's going to come down to who wants it more. And I know the answer to that, Josh freaking Nesbitt. Our O will find a way.

Somebody on our defense needs to take on that roll. I thought it was going to be Burnett. But our secondary has looked out of sorts. We'll know when they've turned the corner when a ball is tipped and it's expected that a GT player is going to come up with the ball. Or when you see a pile formed on a fumble. Regardless of who the refs rule has possession, a GT player will be the one to hand the ref the ball.

The D is coming around. They played pissed in the second half of the FSU game. They played that way the entire UNC game. And I'm guessing they'll play that way every second of homecoming. Now we've got to hope that the coaches put them in the right position to make the key plays.

Here's the total offense the VT defense has surrendered this year in numerical order (not in order played):

Alabama - 498
Dook - 397
Nebraska - 343
Marshall - 252
Miami - 209 (driving rainstorm)
Boston College - 163

Here's the total offense that the GA Tech defense has surrendered:

FSU - 539
MSU - 487
Miami - 454 (3rd game in 12 days)
Clemson - 386
JSU - 291
UNC - 154

Unfortunately, the Miami game, which is the only common opponent, is suspect data for both teams. So ignoring that game, and we still have 5 data points, here are the comparisons, high to low:

498-539
397-487
343-386
252-291
163-154

Those aren't great numbers for either defense. Other than the MSU game, it's only about 40 yards different.

Their most recent game against BC was extremely impressive.

Comparing games most recent to least recent:
VT GT
163 539
397 487
209 154

They are looking pretty darn good to me. Not to mention, they have played a team better than us already, Alabama. We haven't played a team as good as them yet.

If we win this game, it will be HUGE. We can win this thing, but it will require our defense to step up.

I don't know anything about Marshall, but Boston College's offense is horrendous. And when VT jumped out quickly, BC had zero answer trying to play catch up. I am not saying VPI's defense sucks, but they are not as dominating as they have been in recent years.

This is a good point. I mean Clemson held BC to 54 total yards or something like that.

Good point there. It makes me feel a bit better. But I am still expecting that VT will win, even ATS.

I hope I am wrong. I really really hope I am wrong.
