This is an article by the late Bobby Pope in the Macon Telegraph several years ago. Numbers don’t lie.

Even if we got an invite today to join, would it really change our fortunes in football? Tech's problem isn't conference allegiance or high academic standards, it's the administration. They don't give a rip about football, " and that's the gospel truth."

Random question that I guess dead newspaper guy cannot answer. But why does he think GT would have had sellouts and 70k fans each game by being in the SEC... when you can look and see Vanderbilt draws 5,000 fans when their opponent doesn't fill the house. Nashville and Atlanta are very similar with pro sports and both being academically-focused schools moreso than the others. Tech had traditional success with Heisman Alexander and Dodd than vandy never had. But beyond that I'm not sure the GT administration would have allowed them to compete for the jocks.

Macon did used to have some touchdown club speakers though. Town is actually Alot better than it used to be, just not sure about the journalism.

Pretty much during football season, especially since 1966 except for a few good years under Ross, O’Leary, and Johnson.
So you must believe that GT admin and the BOR would have done everything in their power to make Tech keep up with the football factories.
