Article on Darren Waller

He's a great talent. I wish he was better utilized while he was here, as clearly he can create a mismatch at the highest level. I'm always proud of a Tech man who does well.

The ACCC against FSU showed how much we underutilized him.

He almost carried me to a fantasy win last night.

I lost by 1.9 pts.

Two idiotic decisions killed me:
- I started Emmanuel Sanders over Tyler Boyd thinking Sanders would get a lot of targets for an injured Michael Thomas
- I was going to start the NE pats defense vs Seattle, but I hated that matchup thinking Seattle would light it up (they did). FA Options were slim, so I decided to play Seattle Defense vs NE. Seattle got me -2 pts. NE would've gotten me 4 pts mostly due to a pick 6 early in the game.

Dammit.

Unfortunately, I think Waller had much bigger problems at that time than being underutilized. He wasn't the same guy back then.

This. Waller didn’t start to ball until after Smelter went down. Had his off the field issues not hindered him, he would have been the primary target the year before Smelter joined the team.

Glad he got things sorted out. He is a huge talent.

He is what I thought Xavier McGuire and more recently Steven Dolphus could have become. Jalen Camp doesn't quite have the height, but he could be next level

The offense wasn't designed to utilize his skill sets that make him a supreme weapon in the NFL.

Yep. Even his first few years in the NFL were a bust.

He’s since refocused himself on football, and gotten his life on the right track. He is much faster and more explosive today than he ever was at GT.

Meh, disagree. Bay Bay was incredibly successful in that offense, and I don't think Waller would have been a whole lot different if he was able to focus on football. Both are big dudes that can block, run very fast for their size, and win 1v1 battles for balls in the air.

How many times did you see the quick screen to DT8 vs DW? I don't recall any to DW.

Just really happy to see Waller succeed. High profile redemption stories are important for giving others hope, so cool that he can use his success to help others. Comes across as really humble and a great teammate.

I think we used Smelter on that play. I remember us running it some, although not nearly as effectively as with Thomas.
Yeah, we did run the quick screen to Smelter and Micheal Summers a lot, not so much Waller.

I had a <10% chance of winning my fantasy football matchup going into the Sunday night game according to Yahoo. Then waller and Kamara went off and I won by 2 pts

Waller really stepped up when Smelter went down vs. UGA in 2014--those last few games were some of the best of his career. I don't think he was the same player then mentally, and while the offense allowed wide receivers to shine, the scarcity of throws meant it was hard for multiple receivers to get a great deal of touches (so it's probably not coincidental that he stood out when Smelter was out).
