in England, they call soccer Football, and so this must go into the Football forum

absolute insane offer from Manchester City FOR THE RIGHT TO SIGN Kaka from AC Milan for $156 million dollars. This only gives them the right to negotiate with the player, this fee is paid to the club who currently owns his rights in order to get his rights.

Typically the agents involved and the player split about 10% of that as fees and bonuses

The expected wage offer is about $750,000 a week, coming to about $30 million a year

how can they afford this? the club was recently bought by one of the richest oil sheikhs in the world, thats how

Yeah, as screwed up as MLB salaries are, international soccer makes them look like working the McDonalds drive thru.

Who cares about soccer anyway? Bout as stupid as golf if you ask me.

Got to forgive him after all dublin is where the redneck games are held.

I wonder how long it will be until some oil prince decides he wants to own an NFL or MLB team. I pray to God that I never long for the halcyon days of George Steinbrenner's sound fiscal responsibility.

Soccer, by the way, is pretty boring. It's like the Olympics, in that we only care once every four years about it, but it lacks the charm of having wacky ass events or Women's Beach Volleyball. In college football, 3-2 is considered an SEC cockslapping contest between Aubbie and MSU. In soccer, it's a shootout. Lame.

The NFL has so many rules about ownership that it would be hard for an outsider to buy a team. But with the cash some of those guys can throw around you never know.

Still curious though why people who don't like soccer feel the need to tell everyone. Soccer and football are similar in that played well both are very exciting games. Played poorly, both suck.

the Brits are the ones that are worried

not only has Russian "oligarch" Roman Abromovich bough one team, Chelsea, but now Man City has been bought by the Abu Dhabi Investment Group, owned by the Royal family of the United Arab Emirates

in addition, Malcolm Glazer (tampa bay bucs and formerly some hockey team too) bough Manchester United Ltd

Stan Kroenke, billionaire american is a major investor in Arsenal FC

Randy Lerner (Browns) bought Aston Villa FC

George Gillett and Tom Hicks bought Liverpool FC

an Icelander, Eggert Magnusson, has bought West Ham United

so, what must be the case is that there is money in there somewhere, or at least some great write-offs

soccer sucks. I cannot understand the appeal of the game:

low scoring
people faking injuries
stupid "stoppage time"
lots of ties

****, even the US tied the team that won the world cup in 2006.

im sure you prefer american idol or playing with your boyfriends genitals

and in case you didnt figure it out, the post didnt really have anything to do with soccer, but instead with salaries for professional athletes

This is the internet, where my opinion is of the highest magnitude of importance.

I don't own a T-shirt that says "I believe soccer is a stupid, pointless and boring sport." I was simply contributing my two cents to the conversation.

No, you weren't contributing anything, just letting everyone know how cool you are because you don't like soccer. Plus if Kyle agrees with you that proves you're wrong.

Football is definitely more exciting than soccer when you are familiar with the football rules. I grew up watching and loving soccer and only got introduced to football after I moved to the US. So I have some perspective.

I think the greatest thing about soccer is that it has no freaking commercials! (except halftime which you know when and how long.)

Now, if you are a fan of a soccer team, even a 0-0 game for that team is as exciting as an NFL game.

your thread doesn't have anything to do with GT football, yet you still posted it.

moron.

so, a 17-10 football game is more exciting than a 3-2 soccer game because you assign more points for each score? how stupid is that???

17-10 means that one team scored three times, one TD and one FG and the other scored a TD and FG, or twice

so in both cases there are 5 scores, but just b/c one method assigns 7 points for a TD (with PAT) and 3 for a FG, instead of 1 point, that makes it more exciting???

thats like a kid thinking a nickel is worth more than a dime b/c its bigger; or that your speakers are louder because they "go to eleven"

i have played both, as a player, definitely soccer is funner b/c you are in more control of where you play and what you do

football is more interesting from the standpoint of the larger intermittent strategies taking place

for both, watching two good teams is fun, watching two bad teams is not

Watching soccer flops is worse than watching Duke basketball flops.

In response to ncjacket's question...THIS is why. Granted, this was provoked by someone coming in and simply bashing the sport. However, I have plenty of experience with soccer fans who don't like American football trash the sport in a similar manner. I've heard all the same tired taunts "soccer is a beautiful sport", "You just don't understand it", "Maybe if you actually watched it, you would like it". Maybe if you try it, you'll like it", etc.

Bottom line is, I have played soccer for about three years, while taking a break from baseball. I hated it. I though it would grow on me, but it didn't. I watched a good bit of a Man U/Chelsea game last year (when they were in the finals or something like that), and bits and pieces here and there, and I'm not longing to watch more. I don't understand the appeal of it, but, then again, I don't have to. I leave people to their own affairs. If you ask me, I'll tell you I hate the sport. American football is for me, just like tens of thousands enjoy the thrill, excitement, accidental tramplings, and burning of random **** (in victory) that comes with soccer/west virginia football.

Not to derail the thread too much, throwing around that money is just asinine. From my limited following of the Premier League, I assume that Man U is the "Yankees" of the league, no?

A convo by plebes that have no idea wot they're talking about. I lived in jolly ole England for 3 and a half years. No American sports at all. AT ALL. Serious footy (soccer). It took some getting used to but it's a fun game and league.

You people are idiots. Engineers debating soccer. :laugher:
