AUC article on Georgia State football.

This will be like when TSU plays their home games at the Titans stadium (whatever it's called now). ~5,000 fans in an 80,000 seat stadium.

Lets see:

Falcons
Thrashers
Hawks
Braves
Gladiators
Silverbacks
Dream
Buford Braves
Force
Tech
UGA
State

Enough all ready.
How can all of these survive when they are going after the same customers?

Are people going to be interested in watching State play the following:

Massachusetts
Hofstra
New Hampshire
Maine
Northeastern
Rhode Island
Richmond
James Madison
Delaware
Villanova
William & Mary
Towson

This can't be good for us.

I can't decide.

As background info, I believe that the GSU Eagles did not hurt us. We have not had a lot of fans desert us for GSU. I believe that without GSU some of those fans would be Georgie fans first (instead of second).

I believe for every fan we lose to GSU Panthers UGA will lose many. Some may say we can't afford to lose a few fans as much as UGA can afford to lose a lot. Fair point. However I'm not positive that dilution which distracts attention from UGA (for instance at the AJC) won't come mostly at the doggies expense. It is likely that additional coverage of and interest in college football will translate into additional interest and emphasis on all the teams.

Where I think we missed an opportunity was to have a large GSU student section, at some absolute minimal cost (possibly free).

The band could suffer the most.

I will say that the rise of the additional teams in Florida did happen to occur at the same time that Miami and FSU have regressed. I predicted that but now that it has occurred I'm not convinced that it was cause-effect. Just in case, I expect we will have no problems with Georgie Alumni keeping GSU-north and GSU-south from jumping to D1. This should make GSU fans mad at Georgie. Also, I believe that every time the Eagles actually play the doggies the Eagles like Georgie as their #2 team a little less. If they ever win, they will see how obnoxious the Georgie fans really are. And Georgie will lose more fans.

We do not have to play either and we should not play the Eagles as it is a no win for us. I believe that we could play State at little risk and great benefit (in terms of sold out ticket sales for a 1AA opponent).

Ga State will not hurt GT. The schools that should be concerned is Ga Southern and Valdosta St. Where would an athlete want to go to school the middle of nowhere or Atlanta where its a larger media market thus creating more exposure? They will be stealing VSU and Ga Southern's recruits mainly. They have a very big alumni base the 2nd largest in the state I believe, if they do well early good things could happen in that program, I for one am cheering for them. I worked with Mary for a while and she will get this program going in the right direction, she is a very good AD for that program, she's a very bright and motivated lady. I think GT and GSU might share some fans once they get it going over there and thats fine, if GT wasn't at home and I decide not to go on the road trip then I would catch a GSU game if they are in town. This is a rich state for football so they will recruit very well them being a new start up program in Atlanta with a big alumni base, money, and the chance to start a new tradition, granted they will be recruiting the same players as Ga Southern and VSU are not who GT and UGA are thats why if I were Ga Southern or VSU I would be a little nervous.

If GA State and GT would merge academically, GT could field a team that would contend for the National Championship every year. The Board of Regents (or the other BOR) would never let that happen for fear of their precious UGA.

Where will GSU play its games? It better not be Grant Field.

It wont be at Grant Field, some say the Dome but I don't see that happening. Herndon Stadium might be a good option for them to get started with and use the first couple seasons.

The marching band is already composed of many students from GA State, as well as some from Agnes Scott, Emory, Perimeter, and Southern Poly. So in some vague way the athletic programs are merged - through the College of Architecture.

I think there is a high school stadium near tech they could use. Might want to cover up one side of the bleachers so it looks more full.

I had something typed here. I thought better of it. I'll PM you.

Press says the Dome. It says they already have signage and everything to get it ready.

I laughed.

GSU has a lot more students than we do (28,000 vs. 18,000). I'm sure they will make a good showing in the stands. Hell, there are probably a lot more GSU alumni in Atlanta than GT alumni.

By 2015 they are predicting 50,000 students enrolled at State.

And why would we want to devalue our Tech degree like that?
