Awesome 1990 Tribute Video!

We would have made it with the BCS or even with the old Bowl Coalition that went into effect just a couple years after 1990. The SEC, ACC, SWC, Big East, Big Eight, Notre Dame () and the big bowls of the time that had tie ins with these conferences agreed to match up 1 vs. 2 whenever possible within the existing contracts; that would have assured us against Colorado in the Orange back then.

Two things prevented us from playing them in 1990: the contract the ACC had for a few years with the Citrus Bowl, and the fact that all the bowls snagged up their matchups with several games left to play. That's how the Sugar ended up with a 4 loss VIrginia team that year.

At the very least we should have been matched up in the Sugar Bowl against a UT team ranked higher than NU. We'd have beaten the socks off them that year. As it was, even with UVA's QB Shaun Moore playing with a dislocated thumb, they still almost beat them.

Was Swofford ACC Commish back then, or was it Gene Corrigan? If so, it's just another reason to dislike the girl.

With the present-day version, probably but not certainly.

With some of the previous incarnations, probably not. It's not certain Colorado would have made it either.

In the final regular season "predictor" Sagarin ratings, which were once used for the BCS but are not any more, Colorado was #8 and GT was #10. Yet more evidence that Sagarin's ratings are retarded.

The Citrus Bowl tie-in had an escape clause. If a team was ranked #4 or higher on a certain date (I believe it was the first Monday in November), it could get out of the Citrus Bowl contract and go to any available bowl. We were ranked #5 on the date of reckoning.

Even had we qualified for the escape clause, we could not have played Colorado, since they were locked in to the Orange Bowl and the Orange Bowl had already invited Notre Dame at that time. The best we would have gotten was the Sugar Bowl slot UVa nabbed.

BTW, the only reason the escape clause existed is because Clemson insisted on it.

The escape clause actually applied if the champ was ranked 2-4; the Citrus had a clause that would have allowed them to up the payout and keep a #1 rated ACC team, and attract an available #2 team if possible. They spent most of the year hoping UVA would hold on to the top spot so they could bring in Notre Dame or somebody to play them.

Definitely....an undefeated BCS Conference team has only been left out of the championship game one time and that was 2004 when there were three undefeated BCS Conference teams (SoCal, Oklahoma, and Auburn). In 1990, there were not three undefeated BCS Conference teams.

Was the citrus bowl a sell out?

Not certain if it was an 'official' sell out or not --it was pretty packed. It was very warm that day as well --wished I had packed some shorts for that trip.
