BC Game thoughts

It wasn't a happy experience watching that game and a lot of expectations for improvement now seem misplaced.

Our offense had 35 yards of run offense in the first half. The only time we moved the ball is when we hit passes. They were absolutely daring us to pass putting so many people up ohn the line to stop the run. The corners were crashing if play action was to their side and they blew up the pitch over and over again. We need to be passing more and using more formation looks to help JT see the field better.

Simmons played a great game on D. The rest of the D was pretty disappointing. Same old stuff, soft coverage, nobody covers tight ends over the middle. I'll give special teams a good grade. Made the field goal and kickoffs into the end zone for the most part. Punting was spotty.

I like JJ Green, he runs hard and blocks well. Didn't see what the hype was about with Mills, would have like to seen Marshall get more carries. He is a bigger dude and that would have helped some I think on the dives. We lost the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

We got away with winning one we should have lost yesterday.
It is hard to say at this point - if this truly is the beginning of the end of GT Football or are we a legit .500 team that can surprise and go 8-4.

Why would you expect improved DB play right now, we lost a lot of talent there from last year? My biggest disappointment there was that we didn't have anyone who could run down that RB on his 73 yard trip to the end zone.

yep,how did a 230 lb back outrun our 190 lb DBs? scary btw-#17 got faked and #51 got pushed downfield for 5 yds on the run

The country's number one defense from last year returned 8 starters and had all summer to prepare for the TO. Let's see how Mercer and Vandy hold up. If we struggle with those 2 then I might worry that someone #foundtheformula.

I am just as hyped for the season as I was Friday night, and that's pretty ööööing hyped. We got to see some of the playmakers in action, they didn't disappoint. Mills, Marshall, Qua, Jeune, etc. Get Green and Lynch some TDs in the next 2 weeks, we'll be looking forward to a white out Thursday rolling at 3-0.

Surviving the first game is all you need to do. Win and gtfo. Done and done.

In our very good years, we catch lightning in a bottle. We have to have exceptional team chemistry, some timely turnovers, few penalties, few injuries, and something special at qb. We saw most of that yesterday. Rinse and repeat. Build some momentum from here the next two weeks, and we can measure our progress against Clemson.

I'm glad we won, and encouraged by a lot of what I saw. I'll feel better, though, when the offense can rush up and down the field again like most years prior to 2015.

It was a win, and that is the bottom line. I am happy we are 1-0, the alternative would be no fun. That said, I was very disappointed with our running game. I see lots of room for improved play with the linebackers and secondary. Only Gray looks like a better than average player back there. I thought the passing game had a good day and the D-line played well, especially Simmons. Butker was terrific. But, there is no need to act like everything was great because we won. We are fortunate to be 1-0 and now the focus is on the Baptist Bears from Macon and a 2-0 record. We have to improve week to week. There are opponents down the road we can't beat with a Dublin-like performance.

We shouldn't have any issues with Mercer. Vandy will be very illuminating.

If I were coaching against Tech, I would bring those safeties up and dare JT to hit his receivers. OTOH, if you get burned a couple of times then that just might put a stop to some of this crowding the line nonsense we have been seeing of late. Our guys on the outside must start getting separation and making plays. If they can't do it get someone in that can. Boundary corners have absolutely no respect for our receivers. It is hard to run a triple option oriented offense when there are people shooting the gaps on on every play. Make them pay and it will put a stop to that foolishness.

Neither CPJ's offense nor any other has ever been able "to rush up and down the field" against the nation's top defenses.

We've had a lot of fun wins over Kansas and Syracuse and other shell-shocked teams -- but teams with really big, strong DL play have always slowed us (and everyone else) down dramatically (LSU, Iowa, etc).

That's the wrong thing to hope for. Rather, when a great defense meets a great offense (which we may or may not have, we'll see), you figure out which side won by looking to see which one did what was needed to win the game. Our final two drives answer that question.

You simply can't draw many significant conclusions about our offense from this one game -- except that it played what was and is likely to be one of the top defenses in the country and scored in the last two drives of the game to pull out a come from behind victory.

There's much to improve on but little to complain about. That's the distinction a lot of folks on this board don't understand.

We won against a very legit D and a bad but improved BC offense. Anybody remember 2014 wofford??? I do we were up 10-9 at halftime and couldn't pile up more than 270 yards rushing against a FCS team for the entire game. Yes there is work to be done but we have the coaches, players and talent to have a good possibly special season with a little luck. Go Jackets 1-0
