beej would have canceled the 2006 ND game

OTOH, you can schedule who you will, and circumstances will determine if they're a pansy.

ND 2007 did nothing for our strength of schedule.
We've owned Miami for 4 years now.
Then again, Gardner-Webb didn't exactly help us in the eyes of the voters or computers, despite the win, huh?

Several schools have scheduled Wake as a patsy, much to their sorrow in the past few years.

If all we want are exciting games with lots of visibility, then why did we ever fire Chan Gailey? That is exactly what he gave to our program. See: ND '06, both Auburn games, Miami '05(?), etc. When we hired Paul Johnson I'm pretty sure we did it because we wanted to win a national championship.

I think Kyle may have backed into an argument that I somewhat agree with, but I'll be perfectly clear in my intentions on it. Kyle would rather have us schedule marquee games, rather then take the Ohio State path to the MNC game. I can agree with this. I would rather see play us high quality teams. I would rather see us play Auburn and Bama and ND and the teams we traditionally played. But this is because I am not entirely interested in winning a national title. I mean, I would absolutely love to win one, but beating teams I dislike ranks higher to me on the scale then winning every game.

That said, Kyle's argument against Beej is bupkiss. The BCS is changing it's rules every year, and it is pretty much assured that the straightest way to a national title game is by going undefeated and gorging on cupcakes. See THE Ohio State Univeristy 2007 and 2008.

The computers already implicitly use SOS. What don't you get about that? It was taken out because it didn't needed to be double counted.
The polls undercount SOS, so it did need to be double counted. What don't you get about that?

This argument makes sense.

If you don't want to schedule pansies, then you don't want a national title. And if you don't want a national title, then just come out and say so.

Kyle would have canceled the 1990 season.

I guess I am the only one that would like to see us play Florida or USCw or Ohio State or Texas.

I see a lot of opportunity there
1. Visibility
2. $$ (Sold out game)
3. Respect, especially if it is close or you win
4. Entertaining

Sorry, miss state is NOT an exciting opponent. Do you guys even watch the games or do you just look at the score after the game?

I went to the USC game at UVA last year and I can tell you:
1. The visibility on the national stage was good.
2. The game was sold out.
3. No one respected UVA after that game, either in the stadium or in the rest of the country.
4. It was one of the most unentertaining games I have ever been to. I stayed the whole game because the guy I went with is a huge USC fan, but it wasn't fun after the first five minutes. The best part of the whole day was that I got to see a pretty woman's WAHOO, which was the highlight of the whole damn trip.

I like playing oponents that we have some history with (whether from old rivalries or geographic relativity), but scheduling one of the "Big Boys" of college football is not something that I am eager to do.

Part of this reasoning is that most of the high profile matchups are likely to occur in the first few weeks, before teams get into their conference schedule. Travel and traditional matchups are usually the reasoning for this, but I think this would leave us at a big disadvantage. When we play a team in the middle of the season, they have a limited time to prepare for our offense, but if USC or Texas had a month to prepare for us at the beginning of the season....

I'd like to see us schedule some marquee out of conference games. I think some marquee big time opponents could be fun, and get us good exposure, especially since we run the triple O now. But I understand that such scheduling would not help our chances of winning a championship.

Simply put, any "credibility" or "respect" earned after a win (maybe a boost of a couple of spots in the rankings) is severely outweighed by what happens if you lose--even close.

2 times out of 5 years, having a Bama/ND caliber team in addition to Ugag on schedule is nice, not every year.

Either I'm missing something or this is a story that needs to be elaborated upon.

Kyle,
If you schedule pushovers then you'll get your wish. Go undefeated and play a big time school in the national championship. The ACC is a good, tough conference. Clem, Miami, FSU, VT, etc. make for a tough enough road. Adding Ugay every year makes a good, tough schedule. You are talking about 1 or 2 games, and you'll get the good opponent in the bowl game if you win enough games during the season.

If you don't win enough games during the season, adding that extra heavyweight would just be one more embarrasing loss and a ticket back to the Emerald Bowl.

Speaking of which, what is worse, Emerald or Humanitarian?

I vote Humanitarian because it's in potato land on a blue field and it sounds like a mercy bowl.

Humanitarian worse by far.

Crappy location (Boise).

Crappy location (BSU smurf turf).

Crappy tie-ins.

Crappy sponsor(s).

At least the Emerald is in Cali.

The Humanitarian Bowl is sponsored by a truck stop. If that doesn't grab you by the balls and scream class, I don't know what does. Come on down to Roadie's, where you can find some of the cleanest and friendliest lot lizards in all of midwest America and the showers now have 73% less Venezuelan venereal diseases.

Oh hey, who were our OOC opponents in 1990?

Tennessee Chattanooga
South Carolina
Georgia

Loos like our 2009 schedule to me.

Kyle would have canceled the 1990 season.

No, he would have scheduled someone other than Tennessee Chattanooga or Virginia Tech, since UGA and South Carolina are "SEC teams"

if we had beaten another quality opponent, instead of over UT-C or 6-3 over VT, we clearly would have been the consensus #1!

...and we don't need to worry about being consensus #1 now...
