Chan just locked up his 7-win standard. So the bet is on. You still think Chan is gone? I think the only way Rad pulls the trigger this year is if Chan gets caught with a male cheerleader in San Francisco during the Emerald Bowl (NTTAWT). And we know that ain't happening.

Seriously, GT is going to have to get destroyed twice for Rad to get serious about firing him. It could happen, but as long as #22 is on the field its as likely as the cheerleader scenario.

:ugh:

Why would he be nervous? Chan is the one with his job on the line saturday.

kirbee if he loses to UGA he's gone. That's my educated guess, but based on what I know and hear, its dead on. I look for an announcement to be made after the announcement of what bowl we will be playing in. I think Chan will go into the bowl game knowing this is his last game while the coaching search is on. I also look for his replacement to be named prior to the bowl game. Obviously, this doesn't happen if we beat UGA, but if we don't this is what I expect.

DRAD knows that if we lose to UGA, even the most ardent supporters of Gailey will be at their weakest and the strongest detractors will be even stronger. If he waits, he gives us the opportunity to ponder the decision and be indecisive.

I think DRad is a very smart man who understands the psychology of programs and hiring coaches. If we lose to UGA, and do not make an announcement immediately, I wouldn't expect one after the bowl game because then you're just hurting yourself in recruiting. We need to be able to salvage a decent recruiting class and you don't do that by not making arrangements to have a new coach on board by the end of the year.

You're the one that should be nervous. The only remaining scenario under which I lose the bet is if we lose the next 2 games and Chan isn't fired.

..and if that happens, I'll need to do some drinking anyway.

Reminder: If we win 8 games the bet is off again - 7 wins was the bet condition.

Kyle....reading comprehension is your friend.
So what you are saying from your ambiguous topic title is that beej is nervous over a bet that he hasn't agreed to for no risk/reward?

Right... why do you even post here?

For a guy who posts in every thread, you sure do miss a lot! Hehe.

Kirbee and I did agree to a bet, that if Chan went 7-6 he would (me) or wouldn't (kirbee) get fired. We bet whiskey. Terms of whiskey delivery have not yet been named, although I'm of the opinion it should happen at a bar, perhaps during a GT basketball game, so we can drown our sorrows for Sport A while watching Tech fail at Sport B. :P

Although I'm sure I'd like meeting Kirbee, I'm still praying that the terms of the bet (7 wins) are not met, preferably with a surprise upset miracle win over UGA this weekend.

That would make sense to do it right after the UGA wound is open. However, I don't think he'll do it. If he did there will be a loud outcry of "WHY?" from the national media. GT fans will be held up as the latest example of What's Wrong With College Athletics. Does DRad want to go through that? Does DRad want to risk making Tech look bad for decision that isn't clear cut? Is DRad prepared to make that financial commitment?

You really need to look ahead on this one to make the call. Looking back is worthless, really. Unfortunately that's the only thing most Tech fans want to do. "Chan hurts my uterus waaah." When its all said and done, the record says slightly above average, never beat the rival during its best run in history. It is what it is.

Looking forward, Tech will lose a lot of key players this year to graduation and return a solid group of young untested talent. If you pull the plug this year you can guarantee you ruin recruiting this year. That's a given; nobody's gonna step in and recruit to the top 20 for this year. If you hang on another year, recruiting will continue in a good direction and a desperately needed decent class will be brought in to shore things up for the next few years.

Next year will be a "rebuilding" year. It will also be one less year to pay a coach to sit at home if you keep Chan. I don't think Chan will get 7 wins next year for the first time. I don't think a new coach will be able to turn it around next year either. You know Chan's a decent coach and won't totally run things into the ground. But still, next year looks like a lost cause.

I think his chickens will finally come home to roost. You know he's classy and will do things the right way. So given the choice of hiring an unknown plus killing recruiting plus smearing your school in a bad way, plus Tech's financial situation, you give him all the rope and let him coach next year. He'll either hang himself or build a bridge to the next 5 years. I think things will likely go down hill and DRad pull the plug and move forward. Nobody will disagree. It will be overdue in some people's eyes. There will be I told you so's, and rightfully, maybe. But everyone will be ready and the time will be right.

Then in 2009, you bring in a new guy with an experienced bunch of talent, some new energy, a new system and you could get a really quick swing to the program in the right direction.

Just my thoughts.

I think BOR is correct about the timing. If Chan makes it through to a week from today....we should know by then.

I would be VERY disappointed in DRad if we lose to UGA and he waits around on the decision more than 48 hours. This decision better be 95% made and he better already have reviewed 50 resumes if there's a possibility.

The fun part of all this is we're about to really find out what kind of AD we have. We're also about to find out if our AD is planning on sticking around here. The more likely he's going to stay, the more likely he's going to make a move. If he's looking to leave (and there are rumors) he will probably be very cautious unless he can hit a grand slam. (There aren't many grand slams that will come to Tech, either).

How is it smearing your school to wish for some improvement after 6 years, i think if we keep him we are telling the college football world we are not serious about a winning program.

Kirbe,,

Nice post, very rational and logical. However, I don't think the decision making process willl be unemotional if we lose to Ugag. Also, how we lose (if we lose) matters much. If we play a Clemson like game and lose 17-13 then perhaps the decision is tough but if lose by ten or more and the offense looks woeful, I think he is surely gone.

I really don't see how he keeps his job if he goes 0-6 vs UGA and 7-5 with a top 20-25 team. Our wins this year are just not the impressive:

ND - 2-9
Samford - not good
duke - 1-10 (a decent win)
UNC - 3-8
Clemson - 8-3
MIA - 6-5
Army - horrible

Based on this, GT is a top 50 team at best. there aren't many other top 40-50 teams that would keep their coahc after six years and lots of years like this.

The cash would flow from the big money donors if and when he is fired.

You need to reread what I wrote. Not that I'm the greatest writer in the world (right Kyle?). I never said WE would smear anything.

But I've got one example: Solich....Nebraska

(PS - Before someone runs up to gun down the example...examples are never PERFECT...that's why they are examples, not matches. Yet I type this and some moron will still gun down the example because its not a match.)

Kirbee, ill put it to you this way, IF and that is a huge IF he is back next year, get ready to go thru the same unhappy fan base, bad pub, poor crowds and more jokes about our head coach.

Thanks. You make a sound case.

Two points:

1) You say we're top 20-25 team but then prove we're not. Are you saying we COULD BE top 20-25 with the right coach? I'm not sure we have the offensive weapons at WR and QB when you throw in the injuries to our best offensive player #22. Add that up and you get a couple of heartbreaking conference losses on the road early in the season, which can be easily assigned to execution mistakes by players.

2) One of the main criticisms of Chan's program over the years is the roller coaster ride. Beat Auburn, lose to Duke. It appears to me that since he got his own players in the program the variability has stabilized over the past 3 seasons. I can only think of 1 game that Tech had no business losing the last 3 years, and that was against Utah in the Emerald Bowl. On the other hand there are several wins on the slate that maybe we shouldn't have: Miami (first one), Auburn, VT. Now that the consistency has been somewhat rectified, its interesting to me that this is seen as a negative also. I see, as you note, this season we don't have a signature win....but we still have a chance.

And this would be different....???

Edit: I've been a Tech fan long enough to know that all of the above happens every year, no matter what. It isn't new, nor will it change.

Agree.

Also, how we lose (if we lose) matters much.
Disagree completely. If we get blown out, then it's "Chanesque." If we lose a close one, then whichever errors caused us to lose will be construed as either "poor preperation" or "bad coaching" or both, and the loss is "Chanesque" all over again. Any possible loss to UGA this year will be considered "Chanesque" no matter how it happens, and will lead to the same "Chan doesn't get us prepared" rhetoric.

Exactly. The Chan detractors say they hate how inconsistent we are, but that's not true. Really, they just hate losing.

Me too. I hate losing. Especially to Georgia. Especially last year.
