Best defense GT faced in your lifetime

check out Tech's defense 1955 thru 1956. 93 points allowed in two full seasons with two bowl games. 19-2-1 record. Nine shutouts, allowed 2 points and 3 points in two other games. Allowed more that one touchdown only twice in two years, and both times only 14 points.

Hard to really say, but I always remember the 3-3 ND game in 1980. The one that unfortunately lifted UGA to the #1 spot.

But ND still had their chance to beat UGA.

They gave up 10 points a game for 4th place ranking. Less than 100 yards passing and 100 yards rushing allowed per game. 1.1 TDs per game.

In my mind at least, perhaps the single greatest GT "victory" I ever witnessed. Course that was a while ago now.

2000 Uga. Marcus Stroud, Richard Seymour, Charles Grant on the D-line. I think all of the starters from that unit went on to start in the NFL at some point.

Random story. I used to know Charles Grant's cousin. Grant got paid $500 for every sack he got by a booster.

I guess it depends on whether you mean defensive team or defensive performance.

2004 and 2005 Miami was just monstrous. 2003 Maryland was no joke either, their defense had a rocky start that year but they got their act together quickly. I've said it before but our game with them that year was defensive football at its best.

1998 Florida State would be hard to top though. 2000 they had lights out defense and if we had played them in October that year we may have been able to beat them. We were one of two teams that broke 20 against them that year, Miami being the other.

Dodd said '56 might have been his greatest team. Franklin Brooks (guard-capt.) was nx. door neighbor to my g'parents--grew up idolizing him.

Chan Gailey held CJ in check for 3 years! So I am going with Chan.

Yes, he held CJ to only 2 All American Seasons, three first team All-ACC seasons, an ACC rookie of the year award, an ACC player of the year award, a Biletnikoff award, the freshman school record for receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, the school record for touchdowns in a season, and the school record for overall receiving yards. Oh, and second in school history for overall touchdown receptions.

Maybe CPJ should bring him on to try to help keep our current receivers in check too.

Calvin never won the Heisman. Bend but don't break.

Alabama in the early 60s . They were like fire ants. Tennessee in the 60s. Iowa 2009. Miami 2004. A couple of the FSU teams from the late 90s were excellent. North Carolina had some really tough linebackers early in the 2000s. Practically every team facing Tech during the Bill Lewis era would qualify as well.

FSU late 90s...for me not close. That D was unreal in talent and execution

Good thing you weren't a little kid in 1980 and can remember that. Are you on the no fly list?

Well, uh, 2012 UGA was a very good defense, at least in terms of talent but with inconsistent effort. But FSU late-90's definitely, as well as Iowa 2009.

An excellent idol. Franklin Brooks was being considered to become head coach when he contracted cancer.:frown:

This was a really great question--I just expanded it to the greatest defenses I've seen in the region during my lifetime. Somebody mentioned Clemson 1981. Herschel never scored a touchdown against Clemson. He fumbled a couple of times in that game, though he very rarely fumbled. The early 80s Clemson defenses were some of the toughest I ever saw. It was popular to publish how many INCHES per attempt they gave up rushing.

I certainly wouldn't put UGA 2002 or 2012 in that kind of list. Best was actually 2003, but the team was hampered by a terrible offensive line that gave up over 50 sacks. Best before then was probably 1968.

I remember Tech's Black Watch quite well, too. Very tough D, and actually Tenuta's defenses around ten years ago were no slouches. Maybe not on any "greatest ever" lists, but I loved how they took offenses off their games by coming with every kind of blitz possible. I always thought if there'd been some way to keep him when Johnson came...just imagine 2008 and 2009.

It's a toss up between 2015 entire season and 2015 GT scout team
