Best Single Game Coaching Performance?

Last week is very hard to beat.

Bobby Bowden at halftime going "it's like we don't know who to tackle" comes to mind, but the problem with picking any games from the CPJ era is he was usually winning by scoring every time he got the ball - defense was rarely a strong suit and he never did find the right defensive coordinator.

All that being said, I think the Orange Bowl win is the contender. Cam Ward *might* win the Heisman, but Dak Prescott has played on Sundays for many years, and Miss St was the best team in the SECW in 2014. And we didn't just win, we won convincingly. Unlike many of Chan's best games, you couldn't hang this 2014 win on one super-special player. Total team game.
I dunno with Shaq Mason in there I feel pretty good about the offense he steamrolled everyone I remember UGA LBs running away from him

So how do we distinguish between our coaches coaching the "best game ever" vs. their coach coaching the "worst game ever"?

This game had some of both.

There were still some things that Brent does that drive me crazy. A weird timeout here and there or going super conservative offensively, like right after King’s big run at the end of the 1H.
Yea end of half made no sense. Came out running plays and calling timeouts off the 9 yard line; then got to the 40 and ran the clock out.

But they definitely juggled the QB position very well and called a lot of good plays for Philo especially.

I would like to see us take a little more chance on a closeout drive like the one that ended with the 4th and 3 punt that game Miami their last chance. Not saying go for it on 4th, but be a little more creative to not get to 4th right there. That’s nitpicking though.
I didn't mind that somewhat conservative play calling at the end of the 1st half. We had just busted a long run, and I think he was hoping we would pop one more then go into hurry mode. UM had 2 timeouts left and didn't want to chance giving them the ball back. You never know what can happen with Cam Ward back there. It would have been extremely deflating if they scored before half and were getting the ball back.

I also believe we would have gone for it on 4th there near the end had King not lost yards on 3rd down. It was 3rd and 1, and if he had just gotten back to the LOS and made it 4th and 1, I believe we would have gone for it. He made a bad decision on 3rd down too. It should have been a pass to the H back, he easily had the 1st down. King decided to run it and the H back is who would have blocked the guy that tackled him had he not been going out for a pass. Also had Cooley just lowered his head and stayed in bounds on the 2nd down run we wouldn't be talking about any of it. Even in crunch time game on the line, I'll give him a pass one time for that one. He's missed the whole season due to concussion on the first play of the year, and then I thought he got decapitated in the 3rd quarter, but he came back out and kept playing.

So when Miami called the time out on the punt did we line up in a way to cause the concern about a fake or did they get paranoid and waste a
time out? I didn't see anything odd about out punt formation.
I'm still not 100% sure why he called TO there. I think it was miscommunication on his sideline and they thought they had 12 on the field. You can't see it on TV replay because it all happened before it came back from commercial, but they had 12 on the field trying to run a guy off, and the whole stadium was screaming to snap it but we couldn't because the ref was still holding the ball and the TV timeout clock hadn't finished yet. They easily got him off the field before the refs put the ball in play, but I think Mario thought they still had 12 out there. Watching the replay, the TV crew kept saying he must have seen something but we were still in a huddle and didn't have any different personnel on the field, just our normal punt team. So I don't know what he could have seen. He either just didn't like the guys he had on the field, or thought he had 12. I mean during the 2 min timeout surely he would have already thought to put his punt safe team on the field and let them know to be looking for a fake.

I think the win over Miami was the best non-CPJ single game coaching performance I have ever seen from a GT team. We had no business stopping those guys OR moving the ball as consistently as we did, but somehow we did both. Faulkner has deservedly gotten a ton of credit, but let’s not overlook Santucci. We disrupted Miami’s offense more than anyone has all season, and we’re a step ahead of them all game.

I agree but overall this has to be Key’s big victory. He deserves the game ball on this one.

Either Miami didn't have a kicker or didn't trust their defense. I think the first fourth down stop was crucial. They kept playing at the time for the go ahead score vs either a field goal for points or pinning us deep.

It came back to haunt them. If they had made a field goal that would have changed the dynamics and their play calling later

I think they had a lot of faith in their offense actually.

That was really Miami’s problem. They had been behind so many games and had come back to win at the very end at it never occurred to them that they wouldn’t come back and win this game. The too cool for school quarterback insisted on looking calm and relaxed and not showing any sign of urgency that eventually he ran out of chances.

Pieces of the goal posts were moving around the stadium and there were several orange wearing Miami fans still sitting in their seats. I said that they must be waiting for the refs to come back out and give Miami the ball back.
