Big brain move by Collins…

I’m not super happy with the playcalls on our last 2 posessions of regulation today, though.

Same here, but post game I heard the we finished the game with three of our starting o-line out? Is that true, and could that have had something to do with it?

Either way though, no excuse for snapping it with so much time left on the play clock.

Yea, we were getting set with 25 seconds on the play clock. Why do that? You risk getting some sort of procedure call. Go up with 10 seconds. Get set. Hike it. Should snap at about 3-5 seconds.

If their relationship was poor because CDP was doing stupid things like taking a pro talent level running back off the field to insert a backup level TE, then that is good. Their relationship should be poor.
You are probably correct, but I’m not convinced that the decision wouldn’t warrant some debate. Generally speaking, only one of the RBs will actually carry the ball on an individual play. So if you have a second back lined up, his job will be blocking, and you have to ask if his blocking ability is better than adding another position player to fill that role. You can’t justify one of the eleven players being on the field just because he’s a great athlete. He has to contribute to the effectiveness of the offense when he’s not carrying the ball. Maybe it’s to be able to run some kind of option or trick stuff, or by being a receiver threat out of the backfield, but I think you have to figure out a way to benefit the offense knowing that a great RB is on the field risking injury, even when he’s not going to carry the ball.

would like to have seen us go for it on that 4th & short, just shy of FG range. Or even try the FG. Our D was owning them. But Key and staff have made a huge turnaround. Happy our players have good leadership.
The punt netted like 16 yards.

I think that one is the one me and the ST holder next to me discussed before the play. We figured it was just as well to turn the ball over on downs than it would be to likely net 15 yards.

Plus, on our QB sneak earlier, from our endzone seats, you could see Duke left a hole left of center. We called QB sneak left. Sims ran it. First down.

Of course, I don't know if that was a short 4th and 2 or a long 4th and 2, so not sure if a sneak would have worked.

Yeah, I think it was actually 14. Just terrible. Lots of work to do with the punt team - luckily we’ve got some extra time to do it and a coach that seems to recognize where there’s a problem. Same with the approach to burning clock.

Having two capable backs keeps the defense guessing which will get the ball. It also increases the chances of getting a 1v1 matchup against a LB.
Mason was definitely big enough to block for Gibbs and Gibbs was absolutely a receiving threat. Mason also was a receiving threat.
There are plenty of two back sets to work with. We did a terrible job getting our best players on the field last year.

That call was horrible. Collins would have done the same. Maybe we punted so that our world class gunners could take the field again.
