Bilbo Getting Some Snaps at QB during Hula Bowl

From the blog and this article in one of his hometown papers.

Wish him all the best, he's a great guy who took one for the team in changing over to WR. I hope he dominates in the hula bowl, but if he's successful at QB this is going to be bad news for the program and will set us back quite a few steps from becoming the QB U that we appearantly need to be successful. Thoughts?

His tools at the QB are not a question...which can be shown at an All-Star Game type of event...particularly with extremely limited defensive packages allowed.

You have to love his size, speed, and arm strength.

The knock was always reading of defense and accuracy.

As far as a blow to a program if he ever became an NFL QB...that would be a stretch...but not likely something we will ever have to worry about.

Heck...I am still frustrated Hamilton has never got a good shot at the field, despite his size.

Re: Bilbo Getting Some Snaps at QB during Hula Bow

I always thought the biggest issue was learning the playbook? Which seemed to be a bit of a stretch to me, given he's a fairly smart guy, but theres some things we'll never know. Especially with the GTAA bunker... like the Forbidden City in there

Re: Bilbo Getting Some Snaps at QB during Hula Bow

I did hear some off-field work ethic issues early on...but the last couple of years he matured a lot and started to realize his talent.

He is a good kid that stuck with it...I admire that about him.

Seems kind of strange we've stuck with a QB for 3 years that has these very same issues WITHOUT the physical attributes of Bilbo.

I guess we will never know what he could of done with 30 something starts....

He did not have an accuracy problem. His other problems manifested themselves as an accuracy issue. Even his HS stats belie the accuracy issue. RB has a definite accuracy issue. There are reasons other D-1 coaches passed on RB as a QB.

I think this is pretty damning on Gailey, especially if he performs well.

I was thinking the same thing reading these posts.

You Have To Be Kidding ........

he didn't perform when given the chance 3 years ago. Let it rest.

Re: You Have To Be Kidding ........

I have to disagree with some of you. Regardless of the facts (this all happened 3 years ago), IF, and this is a big IF, Bilbo preforms well and ends up on the depth chart at QB for a pro team, Chan and Tech will not look good to future recruits.

I wish him the best though, he's a great guy, understands what team means, and will represent Tech well in his future endevors, whatever they might be.

Personally I see him going to the NFL as an athlete and working all over the field (short yardage strong safety?, wr, special teams, etc) for the next few years. And its a shame that guys like that don't get more credit.

Strong possibility. Gailey is, afterall, Sports Illustrated's "worst coach" for the second year running.

Re: You Have To Be Kidding ........

I hope he performs well at QB. Remember, D-Bo did play a little at QB in last years 19-13 loss at UGA. He hadn't plaed any really since the 2002 season behind Suggs, and even then didn't really get a good chance. Played poorly in the mud bowl in San Jose that December, but who didn't?

I have to feel that with 30+ starts under his belt that Damarius Bilbo would be ahead of where Reggie Ball is after 30+ starts. Running from QB might even be better becuase Damarius is a stronger guy with more size than RB. I also bet throwing would be better than 47% as well.

But that's all speculation I guess. Reggie Ball is our guy and I will pull like heck for him to win us some games in '06. I may not agree with a lot of things Chan or Reggie does or even says, but I will pull for those guys as long as they are here. But I will also pull for D-Bo too. I wish more were like him.

After the bowl game, I'm beginning to believe it! It will certainly be interesting!
PS..I found the article in SI that you referenced!

Does anyone know how these senior bowls work?
I mean was it DBo that approached a coach, or did an NFL scout or coach ask Bilbo to take some snaps?

If the latter, that's already a face slap to the 3 year old decision to move him.
If it's the former, these practices must be real loosey-goosey.
I wish DBo all the best!

Who are the coaches for the game? btw, what I saw is that they're going to let him throw it around some in practice. He may do that and still not play qb in the game.

I might let it go if we had a QB who hasn't performed worse in quite a few games and who was given every opportunity to be the QB, yet has shown little to no improvement in 37 starts.

Re: You Have To Be Kidding ........

I've really been impressed with DB last couple years, especially this year. maybe RB will take a clue next year when he gets moved to RB/DB/WR (we hope!)

Best I see for DB is a Randle El type of career - Occasional shotgun snaps from center, halfback options, fleaflickers, etc, but with main focus on WR. With his size and speed and improvement in running routes, I think he'll make some NFL roster at receiver.

PUH-LEEZE

If anyone thinks DBo will be on an NFL Roster as a QB, I've got plenty of beach front property in Nebraska for sale.

I wish this guy all the best and his future is at WR. An oversized Randle-El?? Maybe. But I surely doubt he'll be playing QB at the next level.

And please stop with the woulda-coulda with him at QB for the Jackets. RB obviously has room for improvement, still, but Bilbo had his chance and the coaches put him where they thought he could help us best.

I mean really, how many players who were switched from QB early on in their college career ended up at QB in the NFL, after harldy any time playing QB on the field in College??

and Reggie has been ?????????? AWFUL!

Re: PUH-LEEZE

He may never get a chance to be a QB again, but the thing that will always stick in my mind was the game vs. Wake in Chan's first year, when Suggs was looking awful. Chan finally puts Bilbo in for a series late in the third quarter or in the 4th quarter. On his first or second play he throws about a 65-yard touchdown pass. After that, I'm thinking surely Gailey will keep him in so we actually have a chance to win. But I was wrong. Suggs is in for the very next series and Bilbo doesn't take another snap all game and we lose. I believe Chan knows a great deal about football, certainly much more than myself..but unfortunately his stubbornness prevents him from making changes that are needed.
