Tech up 21-20, UGA 40 yard line, 1:30 left in the 4th, 4th and 1.
Running triple right, JT keeps, jukes, and then pitches late. Snoddy has poor pitch relationship and gets too far up the field. JT pitches it as he's passing the line of scrimmage and getting hit causing the pitch to hit the ground and roll to Snoddy. A group of UGA players from the bench spill onto the field celebrating the crushing hit on JT. Snoddy starts to pick it up to run, but the ref right next to him cuts between him and the ball to signal incomplete forward pass and then throws a flag. Refs discuss it for awhile while the commentators assume that it's a 15 yard penalty on the UGA bench for being on the field during the play setting Tech up with a 1st and 10 from the 25. Game is essentially over as UGA has no timeouts left so Tech will be in victory formation. Ref turns on the microphone and says the call on the field is an illegal forward pass that was incomplete - 5 yard penalty and loss of down - UGA ball. Commentators lose their mind.
Booth radios in for a review of whether it was an incomplete pass or a pitch. Commentators talk us through the play that shows the ball clearly being pitched backwards regardless of where JT was in relation to the LOS. "So what do we do about the play? Play it over? Can the flag even be picked up? And where was the flag on the UGA bench??" Ref trots back onto the field.
"The call on the field is reversed. The runner was not past the line of scrimmage and lateraled the ball." Tech fans start cheering. "A whistle was blown, but there was a clear recovery by Georgia. First and 10 Georgia."
Announcers lose their mind and run the replay again. They need a second camera angle to see the ref cutting in front of Snoddy followed by a UGA defender walking over to pick up the ball behind him 5 seconds later and then walk out of bounds and hand it to the guy holding all the balls. "Well, the ref cut Snoddy off from the ball, but I suppose that technically is a clear recovery. Wow."
UGA takes over, drives 23 yards on 3 plays to set up a 54 yarder to win. CPJ calls our final timeout. During the timeout the commentators take us back to the bizarre play one more time. They notice that the UGA defender who recovered the fumble wasn't even on the field when the play started. He was part of the group that had jumped out onto the field while celebrating the hit on JT before realizing JT had gotten the pitch off and picked up the ball because he heard the whistle. Replay cuts out as UGA hits the game winning field goal.
Did I just meet the author of my nightmares?
