Bob Stoops steps down

Yep. Must be health reasons.
heard Scott Ferrall on the radio last night say that Stoops father died while coaching of a heart attack. must have been weighing on his mind.
i have not tried to verify this tidbit. would not be surprised to find out that's not the case.

Stoops has heart disease, and his father, Ron, died in 1988 at age 54 of a heart attack suffered while coaching a high school game. Stoops said his health was not a factor in his decision, and reports that he was ill were false.

He supposedly bought a house in Chicago about a month ago. One possibility is maybe NFL after a year off, but I'm just parroting what I heard from Mike and Mike this morning.

That would be a horrible decision

Another possibility I heard this morning based on this Chicago house is Notre Dame after a year off. Something about the year off making him a free agent (not sure what free agent means in this case).

Coach Dodd retired at about the same age. Sometimes people just want to fo somwthing different, or realize they don't have the fire anymore. I applaud him.

I agree in principle. The thing that makes it odd is the timing and apparent abruptness. But I don't follow Oklahoma football, so I don't know if he had been mulling over retirement previously.

I can understand his motivation. Dad died of a heart attack coaching a football game. Stoops is already late 58. Has more money than he needs. He will be revered the rest of his life at Oklahoma. Leave on a winning note

That "tidbit" was in the first link of the thread and mentions his father dying coaching a football game. Do you ever pay attention?

I agree the timing was a little strange. But it did come after signing day, and it gives Lincoln Riley the summer to work camps and recruits. In this day and time, football is a 12 month a year thing for coaches. There really never is a "good time" to leave.
