If we replaced Bobby Cremins, there is no reason to retain Paul Johnson.

Cremins last five seasons:

1996 24-12 13-3 Conference Champ Sweet 16
1997 9-18 3-13
1998 19-14 6-10 NIT Quarterfinal
1999 15-16 6-10 NIT First Round
2000 13-17 5-11

Johnson last five seasons:

2014 11-3 6-2 Won Coastal Won Orange Bowl
2015 3-9 1-7
2016 9-4 4-4 Won Taxslayer Bowl
2017 5-6 4-4
2018 3-4 1-3

Prior to his final five seasons, Cremins had a conference championship, a final four, an elite eight and two sweet sixteens.

Prior to his final five seasons, Johnson had two Coastal conference championships, won the Sun Bowl and lost the Chick-Fil-A, Orange, Independence, Sun and Music City bowls.

K. Mods make this a sticky. Also, copy and sticky in basketball forum. Cause, I guess it's important.

I don’t think it’s fair to compare football to basketball.

In basketball you need two key pieces and you can win. In football you need many, many more.

If basketball is so much easier, why do we have one NCAA appearance in the last 11 seasons. Cremins was by any definition the best basketball coach in Georgia Tech history. He had nine straight NCAA appearances and ten total. There are at least three football coaches better than Johnson.

I saw Bobby at the hotel after the game (he left early, too) and asked if he had any football knowledge to share with our current coach. He stayed classier than I did.

Now that’s a different argument to be had.

Your original point was about comparing Johnson to Cremins.

I am sorry, but to mention Bobby Cremins and his accomplishments in the same breath as Paul Johnson is basically sacrilege. There was no history of basketball success before Bobby Cremins. There was considerable football heritage before CPJ. Might be none after him though.

I saw Peterson walking around working the crowd before the parade. Rather than say something without class I just kept my mouth shut.

Cremins is the best hoops coach in our history; CPJ has worse win percentages than Gailey

Best argument I've seen for making a change. It's okay to acknowledge that Johnson has accomplished some really good things at GT but still want a change.

Both had a lot of successs, particularly early on. But then Cremins had 3 losing seasons in his last 4 years, just like it looks like Johnson will. Not as much difference as you probably think.

I was simply responding to the reply above stating that it wasn't fair to compare football and basketball success.

Just 3??

So what are the chances our stadium will be renamed Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field and Johnson End Zones?

In order to use this example as a case for firing Johnson, you'd have to show that firing Cremmins was the correct course of action. Who'd we replace Cremmins with? I'm trying to remember...

Yes. This seems to be an argument against firing: A cautionary tale that firing a successful coach with a few bad seasons in a row can lead to a string of bad hire that never reach consistent success.

Thats exactly whats gonna happen. We're not even done paying Hewitt or Gregory yet, we're gonna be paying Johnson too. Meanwhile our AD is gonna be begging rich alumni to donate more. And then we're gonna end up with a Tech man who hasnt done shit yet or gamble on some up and coming coach who did well in an FCS school. I dont have a problem with firing Johnson except our alumni and fans are cheap as shit so no I dont think we're gonna end up hiring someone better. Deep down we all know this too.

Technically, did we fire CBC? But I get the point.

How did his replacement do? Well he got us a shot in the national championship game.

That, to me anyway, is better than CPJ’s mythical games played in the CFP (you know the one we actually DID NOT play in?)

But again, point taken.

So not sure why a guy that got GT to the national championship game but started losing after that was more deserving to be fired after year 11, than a guy who has not gotten us into CFP and has started losing more after that in year 11.

But, as I said, I think CBC “retired”.

But sadly fewer and fewer are starting to care, in either sport.

this is why CPJ should "retire" asap.
