Booooommmmm!

I guess this retarded head coach in waiting thing is going to be the hot thing now. It doesnt make any sense, changing coaches is almost never a pleasant experience where someone retires and just walks away, normally they're forced out and everyone wants a clean house.

Mack is only 57? WTF are they doing this for? This is just a gimmick to show love to an assistant coach. Expect every school to have one of these soon.

WOW. This head coach in waiting thing is getting ridiculous. I wonder when the first head coach in waiting that is currently at another school will happen? Maybe Bill Lewis can be named head coach in waiting at ugay?

i played under muschamp at valdosta...good for him...

i guess this is the trendy thing to do..have a coach in waiting.....

Guess he won't be coaching UT or Clem(p)son next year. I thought he would land somewhere and make boat loads of money, but I guess Texas is promising some serious cash.

I guess it's something to add to a recruiting pitch. I could see Bob Stoops, who is 48, saying "Mack Brown might be getting close retirement. Do you want to take chances on who might be coaching you then?"

It could also be a hedge, locking up a good coach like Muschamp now instead of in a couple of years, when he might have lucrative competing offers.

This is incredibly stupid in my opinion. First it shows that schools like Texas are so loaded with money from football that they can just waste it wherever they want.

But more importantly, why not let the guy coach for five years somewhere else and get some experience. Head coaching experience is important. I think big schools are going to be disappointed by doing this a lot in the future.

I'll bet they are as much loaded from alumni and friends as football. They have one of the largest endowments in the country - maybe top 5.

I guess we will be having congressional hearings about NCAA football bailouts when they go broke throwing money at these guys.

When you have a bad season and chuck the head coach do you also chuck the head coach in waiting?

If the team is doing poorly do you keep the number two guy? Can the head coach get rid of the coach in waiting?

It makes my head sore thinking about it. :eek5:

Is there a million dollar per year assistant in ncaa fb yet? I can remember when the coaches started making 1 mil + and I am not that old.

I can't imagine, just knowing people, that this kind of relationship will work for the team or the coaches.

Maybe I'm just up for some devil's advocacy, but I don't see why this is such a bad thing. Of course there's a price to pay, but if you've got the cash flow why not lock in a guy that you know other schools desire and that a couple of years down the road would be a guy you'd like to run your program?

I understand there's a trade off and what if someone better is available (Do you think Florida State would keep Jimbo in the hole if they got a call from Richt saying he was ready to come home?) when the time comes. But you're locking in a guy that can be with your program, recruit for the future and maintain a relatively smooth transition rather than stopping the machine in it's tracks and losing commits while you hunt for your next head man.

Plus, it can't hurt the GameDay storylines for the first time that one of these guys accepts this coach-in-waiting roll and jets for another, higher paying offer. :)

900k isn't as much as I thought it'd be. What did Tenuta make while he was here?

Too much... having seen what Wommack has thrown out there with all of JT's players minus Guyton and Wheeler.
