Packers Sign P Brooks, Release RB Korte From Practice Squad
posted 12/15/2008

The Green Bay Packers have signed punter Durant Brooks to the practice squad and released running back Steven Korte from the practice squad. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the transactions Monday.

A 6-foot, 204-pound rookie from Georgia Tech, Brooks was drafted in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins and played in six games.

He will wear No. 8.

Good to hear. Hopefully he can fix his nerves or whatever else was causing him to mess up on gameday.

Glad to see he is getting another shot. He definitely deserves it.

Sweet! I've wanted a GT player on the Packers. Now if only we can get Calvin Johnson and Tashard Choice...

Hopefully they'll let him take the extra step. I think he got hosed in Washington when they tried to change his kicking technique.

Yeah, I don't get why you change the kicking technique of one of the most accurate and powerful punters in recent college football.

Coach's ego, probably. The NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE tends to be a little full of itself and think they're on a different level than anything else, and that you can only do things a certain way.

You don't mess with an accurate punter who can potentially punt as far as 77 yards. You just let him punt how he wants to punt. Washington coach is just stupid.

Didn't Durant work really closely with Ray Guy while he was in school? What does that guy know about punting, right coach Zorn?

I have heard that the Redskins' ST coach was having Brooks practice much, much more than kickeers on other teams. Kickers on other teams were surprised at how much Brooks was required to practice relative to their own practices.

Possibly Brooks was "overkicking" in practice?

That's possible. Just drives me crazy that a kid like Durant couldn't kick the ball the exact same way he did in college. Sorry, but I don't think there is anything you can change in a punter like Brooks to make him better.

Hope he can punt rocks (at least for 5 or 6 home games each year)....

Do they make steel-toed kicking shoes?

You are saying it gets so cold in GB that the ball is like a rock?

no, i think he is saying that he wants Durant to kick rocks through the windows of the stadium during home games

hello

About changing the kicking style:

I remember reading somewhere last year that most punters in college use a 3 step kick, but punters in the NFL use a 2 step kick because of the faster players.

But here's the kicker (no pun intended). Brooks was considered a sure shot in the NFL greatly because he used a 2 step kick even in COLLEGE. The article was all about he needed to do the EXACT SAME thing in the NFL as he did in college, unlike most other college punters.

So I have no clue what Zorn was doing if these talks of him trying to change Brooks' punting style are accurate.

The kid is going to be a pro-bowl punter and Zorn will look like an idiot.

Well I've heard from a reliable source that he is the worst coach in the world.

Anybody that watches the Redskins could have come to that conclusion :p

Thanks, Jim. You really cleared things up.
