Good video here of Butch Davis breaking down WVU's Triple Option out of the Shotgun Spread. I don't think many take CPJ seriously when he compares his O to the 'gun Spread teams, but this video shows why they are similiar.

RichRod and Tommy Boy Bowden were running the spread option at Tulane, right? He may be one of the inventors of this type of option.

Bowden was HC with Rich Rod as OC both at Tulane and then Clemson for a few years I believe. Seems like Bowden kind of limited how much he let RRod commit to the Spread Zone Read. When RRod got the WVU job, he was able to fully commit and take it to the next level. Urban Meyer and Dan Mullen started doing it at Bowling Green, IIRC. But they learned alot of it from Rich Rod.

WVU was definitely among the teams to popularize running the option out of the shotgun.

I ran into THIS article regarding just that.(it actually mentions PJ as well)

Hey great article, TechinItEasy. It occured to me while reading that about a D-III OC, that if in a few years we start losing asst coaches that there are soo many coaches throughout the different levels of college football that know how to run option based offenses that CPJ should never have a problem finding good assistants that know what they doing.
