BUTLER comitted tonight

If there's anything we're light on, it's DBs. Can't say I fault the coaches for trying to fill out those spots.

Consider that ~75% of GT's roster couldn't start at GT.

I like that one.

This sounds like a good get to me, got the measuarbles, see what he can do. I also like anybody who is wants to be an engineer, hope he can pull it off with the football grind.

Speaking of 4.0 EE football players I wonder what Sheldon Fox is up to these days (think that was his name, an LB in the early 80's dark days). I don't mind saying I was jealous of that guy.

Hey -im not down on the guy..or his potential. I just want to get excited about some big time recruits. No we don't get what OSU, TX, FLA ..etc gets, but I want to atleast get close to what we got last year: Burnett.. et al

Well you shoulda been lobbying to keep Gailey then. Any coaching change results in transfers, lost recruits and lost commits. If you can link to one post where you lobbied to keep Gailey I personally will stop thinking that you are a horses' donkey.

If you're not down on him, don't post like it.

BTW, 3 star now. Do you like him better?

3 star seems much more interesting. I'll just keep telling myself that this would have been DUKE's most heralded recruit for 2008.

Lets try doing some homework before posting.

First of all...while other offers is a good gauge it is not the best gauge. Again...look at film and measurables yourself. For instance it was easy to tell from film that Jonathan Smith, Keith Brooking, Vance Walker, etc. were going to be good players despite most not agreeing.

Second...Lee Butler committed back in June...VERY early. This caused most to back off. Plus...he wanted an academic oriented school. He wants to major in electrical engineering. However...even back in June he already had offers from Maryland and Vanderbilt in addition to Duke. Others sniffed around like NCState, Louisville, Clemson, etc. but he stayed strong with Duke.

Our academic strength combined with football success is what caused him to listen to us.

Exactly. Even taking all of that away, the kid was still a player GT wanted and unless you're a talent scout, saying that 95% of Duke can't start at Tech is a pretty ignorant statement.

Considering the state of the program and the fact that we just hired a new coach, expecting us to recruit with the UM's and USC's of the world is foolish. Sure it would be nice and, of course, anything is possible. But what is LIKELY is pretty much what we're getting. Look at Jabba Weis's first recruiting class... It was worse!

Sorry man, but this obsession with the fact that Butler originally intended to play at Duke is dumb. That has nothing to do with his talent level, just that he thinks academics is important as well. If we had offered early on he may very well have committed to Gailey. Would you like him better then? Also, what if Renfree goes to Duke? Will that make him a worse player?

You know I've often speculated that we could take
the top 5 or so players from any Div. 1 AA team &
they would be solid contributors for us. Football is
football. Every team has good players. Just some
teams have more of them.

Give me the top recruit from any Div. 1 team & I'll
take it. We've taken players that were highly
recruited & thumped our chest about who else was
recruiting them, & then they never see the field.

No doubt! What's worse is that too often, the rankings of recruits gets based primarily on who's offering. You could bet that if you take the same player; give him a Florida, USC, and Oklahoma set of offers against a Tulsa, Miami OH, Baylor set of offers, and you'd see probably a 2 tier difference in his ranking!

Why don't you think about getting excited when it really matters? This fall when we start playing football on the field.

Tell that to UNC and Butch Davis last year when he rolled in his first year and landed a top 15 national class.

Yea and look what butch davis is doing this year. Pj class is better. Lee butler is a beast i dont care what star on any of that he is he looks great on film.

If we were looking for a head coach that would jump in and nail an uber class his first year, we should have fired Chan with 3 games left to go and hired Newheisel.

Football success /= star rankings.
