GOL is twice the recruiter and coach that CCG is, and it's proved out by the leaps and bounds UCF has taken under his watch.
I don't think it is productive to compare the two coaches. They are almost total opposites as are their coaching styles.
From the time he took the UCF job, I felt that GOL is at the right place at the right time. IMHO, it is a perfect fit and he should do very well.
GA Tech is a difficult school for GOL to recruit and retain the type of athletes he preferred (Flunkgate). He would have faced the same situation at ND. I'll always fondly remember when he spoke to our Yellow Jacket club during his first year as our head coach. After telling what he planned to do, someone asked him if he was worried about the players accepting his philosophy. "I am not worried about what the players think," he growled. "They had better worry about what I think."
GOL ran off some players, like the lineman he used for a tackling dummy. CCG has lost players also, but not like that. His approach is almost 180 degrees opposite of GOL and requires a different mentality among his players.
Perhaps GOL and John Tenuta are more of the same mindset, while Fridge might be a little more like CCG. I really cannot say that with any degree of conviction since I simply do not know; I can only speculate.
I do know that GOL and Fridge had a great system. GOL would blast a player's poor performance and the Fridge would pick him up, dust him off, pat him on the back and bolster his badly bruised ego. Good cop, bad cop...they were a great team. GOL without Fridge, however,...that is a different story.
As to recruiting...Calvin plus last year's class shows that we can attract very high quality players that fit CCG's criteria. I just hope that Chan stays awhile longer. New coaching personalities, philosophies and styles every five or six years is no way to build a consistent football program.
