Can anyone explain how UCLA/USC in the Big 10 makes sense?

San Diego State basketball head coach Brian Dutcher commented on this with regard to the travel requirements facing these schools in the future. His comments from the travel required for the NCAA Tournament:

"Even though [our flight] was a charter, I thought, my goodness, those guys (USC, UCLA) have to do this every other week to play a basketball game? It would be exhausting," he said. "It's going to be a real challenge to be at their best with that kind of travel. I'm wishing them all the best, but that's more travel than I would ever wish on anybody."

Also mentioned in the article that the move by USC and UCLA opens the door for San Diego State to move up in stature and influence in the Southern California area and become a viable candidate for the PAC 12 or Big 12.

"I always thought the Pac-12 would not ask us in with UCLA and USC because they would put us on equal footing, and we would be too great a competitor to let in," Dutcher said. "So now that they're gone and Southern California has a really good team sitting in San Diego, I would think we would be desirable for the Pac-12, the Big 12, a lot of conferences."

Seems reasonable. Something to definitely consider when thinking about joining a national/non-regional conference like the Big 10. Could open the door for regional programs like Georgia Southern or Georgia State to gain even more ground. Thoughts?

Sure... "here's a ton of money, all you have to do is smash yourself in the face with a hammer everyday for the rest of your life."

Not all decisions based on more money make sense.

It does when you run an athletic department that needs to keep up with facilities, contracts, etc. and a conference that pays you twice as much as you make today comes knocking.

It's actually more like "here's a ton of money, all you have to do is have the people making you that money smash themselves in the face with a hammer everyday for the next few years while you sit in your office unblemished."

You would be surprised how many people would say yes I can put up with a hammer to the face every day for a lot of money.

The NCAA universities are smashing unpaid students, not themselves, with said hammer.

What kind of hammer and how much money are we talking? It's not like I need my face to look good anymore. I'm old and already have two kids.

Toffee hammer, 1MM per day.
or
Sledgehammer, 100 per day.

It doesn't really matter at this point. We now know you're a whore, and we're just negotiating the terms. And your face never looked good anyway.

The Big Ten took USC and UCLA because otherwise the SEC would have. Having said that, of course you take over LA, a pretty big market.

My observation from the NCAA’s, is NIL is working for basketball. Not so much for football. It will be interesting to watch how these two sports do in the next ten years.

The ACC should have taken Texas and Oklahoma, and before that Penn state.

Is a four hour charter flight that much more exhausting than a 2 hour charter flight? Weren't they already going from LA to Seattle? I guess it is supposed to be more exhausting than going to San Diego or San Fran in Cali traffic by bus.

Yeah, I doubt any team goes anywhere on a bus these days. It's just longer flights...
