Can anyone explain how UCLA/USC in the Big 10 makes sense?

The Big Ten took USC and UCLA because otherwise the SEC would have. Having said that, of course you take over LA, a pretty big market.

My observation from the NCAA’s, is NIL is working for basketball. Not so much for football. It will be interesting to watch how these two sports do in the next ten years.

The ACC should have taken Texas and Oklahoma, and before that Penn state.
LA is not a big market for college football. I used to live there. No one cared about anything except UCLA vs USC, and even then it was mostly alumni. Lakers, Dodgers, more Lakers, even more Lakers, more Dodgers, Clippers, Rams, some more Lakers, Kings, some more Dodgers, Chargers, Angels . . . then maybe USC. Or the Raiders. Finally . . . UCLA.

San Diego State basketball head coach Brian Dutcher commented on this with regard to the travel requirements facing these schools in the future. His comments from the travel required for the NCAA Tournament:

"Even though [our flight] was a charter, I thought, my goodness, those guys (USC, UCLA) have to do this every other week to play a basketball game? It would be exhausting," he said. "It's going to be a real challenge to be at their best with that kind of travel. I'm wishing them all the best, but that's more travel than I would ever wish on anybody."

Also mentioned in the article that the move by USC and UCLA opens the door for San Diego State to move up in stature and influence in the Southern California area and become a viable candidate for the PAC 12 or Big 12.

"I always thought the Pac-12 would not ask us in with UCLA and USC because they would put us on equal footing, and we would be too great a competitor to let in," Dutcher said. "So now that they're gone and Southern California has a really good team sitting in San Diego, I would think we would be desirable for the Pac-12, the Big 12, a lot of conferences."

Seems reasonable. Something to definitely consider when thinking about joining a national/non-regional conference like the Big 10. Could open the door for regional programs like Georgia Southern or Georgia State to gain even more ground. Thoughts?
USC and UCLA are in a lame, uninspiring conference. They want to be relevant.
GT should do the same.

Yes, Tech should accept the invitation that the B1G Ten extended for Tech to join just as soon as Tech's commitment to the ACC runs out in 2035, just like UCLA and USC will do when their PAC-12 commitment runs out after next year.

Commitments get broken.

Is a four hour charter flight that much more exhausting than a 2 hour charter flight? Weren't they already going from LA to Seattle? I guess it is supposed to be more exhausting than going to San Diego or San Fran in Cali traffic by bus.

Depending on when they leave, I'd say yes, for sure.

If they have the whole day for travel and fly during the day, then it's probably not a big deal.

If they're leaving in the early evening after classes and now they're getting in at 11pm and to bed at 1am instead of getting in at 9pm and to bed at 11pm, then yes, I think that is much more tiring.

Similarly, if they fly in the morning and now they have to get up at 5 am instead of 7 am, I do think that would have an impact. Especially when you throw in the fact that LA to Seattle doesn't involve a time change but going back and forth to the Midwest does.

Don't forget that all of that is cumulative. Doing it for a weekend, maybe no big deal. Doing it for a weeks long tournament, that gets old pretty quick. Doing it for several consecutive months during a season, that is going to be exhausting. Doing it for the entire season, including tournaments, year after year, no thanks. All while supposedly trying to earn a degree.

I don't think this has been thought out very well.

I agree how about minor college sports like volleyball, soccer etc. The cost of constantly flying across the country for sports that do not make money is going to be enormous.

They're just treating it fully like a professional sport at this point. Pros do this all the time.

And yeah, it sucks and possibly affects performance sometimes, but they're getting paid a lot and it's their only job so no one really cares. They complain sometimes but they're mostly on board with it because it maximizes revenue, and half of that revenue goes into their pockets.

Yes, collegiate sports in name only. I suppose we've fully crossed the rubicon.

It’s all about the money and making sure they stay in the top division when a split occurs. They don’t give a öööö about non-revenue sports experience.

Big 10 payouts likely to go over $70M per school per year with USC and UCLA.

SEC is $55M and set to go up to $75 next year.

ACC is about $35M and locked in the suicide pact Grant of Rights until 2036.

Big 12 gets $32M after Texas and OU leave.

PAC is fighting for and may not hit $30M.

It doesn't. The powers that be that made this decision have more $ than sense.

Good God our leadership is so inept. Really, we should have some sort of legal recourse for having someone of diminished mental capacity getting us into this agreement.

When Miami and VT entered the ACC, there was talk of the ACC challenging the SEC for football dominance. How in the hell did Swofford and crew screw this up so badly?

Didn't help that the teams themselves fked up and led to an age of VT and BC football dominance.

Come on gents. The B1G needed a way to up the overall conference “Gold Standard” if you know what I mean.

I think you already know that answer. He never considered any of the ‘newer” programs, including GT, to be of equal importance to Tobacco Road and their elitist basketball conference
