CFB Returning Production (ESPN)

It reads as a strong positive compared to last year. We should expect a significant improvement.

The problem is, we could improve markedly and still go 3-9 again. We really won't know what to expect until we get back out there.

Our OL is going to be much better. I can assure you that. Even just a minor improvement there will help the offense everywhere.

Its a 6 win team imo. OL needs to gel darn fast and qb needs to progress. But 6 wins to me is a target even with this so called hard schedule. Which it may be. But 6 wins is a target.

last year i said 3-4. So it think my 6 is fine. Not 7. More 5 than 7. But will go with 6.

I hope so. If we improve across both lines I think we'll be so much better we'll be almost unrecognizable.

Just keep recruiting. If you get the players, the wins will come sooner or later.
And if you dont win the players won't come

They got a pass on year one because they sold it. It will be much harder to sell "transition unlike any other in 40 years of college football" in year 2.

Agreed.

Last year we had damn near the worst offense in FBS and about the 70th ranked defense (which is consistent with where we've been since 2009, more or less). Given the new pieces, I am guessing we'll end up with about the 80th ranked offense and 50th ranked defense. We're still going to be quite young and inexperienced. I expect in the CGC era that our offense will peak out around 40-50s. Defense, let's just say that I am extremely hopeful that we will one day see good LB play on the flats again, but it's probably a few years away yet.

The offensive line will be much better. We added two quality fifth year senior offensive linemen and we get a hopefully healthy Cooper back. We have a quality freshman class to add depth. With the new rule we can rotate the freshman to retain their red shirt. Plus a year of coaching by Brent Key.
We have more quality skill players. If we find a QB the offense will take off.

Upon hiring, one of the Fonts Against Geoff predicted we would win 6 games over the first two years. I am taking that as gospel, so anything above 3 wins this upcoming year is exceeding the expectations of the Fonts Against Geoff. So no complaints.

For everyone else, I think we are all in the 5 to 7 expectation range, and would be happy in the 8 to 15 win range.

That means 4 win would leave everyone confused.

My dissatisfaction (mainly with the OC) was not just about losing, but how we lost. Another home shutout, another loss to an FCS team, another historic UGA thumping...? Those things would definitely leave me very unhappy.

Then I am sure you were livid with the people responsible for leaving the cupboard empty.

Why re-litigate this?

Huh? Litigation is indeed my thing... but you're the one dividing the fanbase into 'Fonts Against Geoff' and talking about "the empty cupboard". Everyone on this board wants CGC to succeed. I was just trying to explain why "win totals" are inadequate to capture my attitude.

Oh? I missed that, with all the negative comments on Patenaude and others. Which precipitated any comments of mine on the past you find displeasing. Your very post was a model for negative nellies. So I find you doth protest too much.

But tell me again tales of everyone on this board wanting CGC to succeed.

Fans don't know enough to have intelligent opinions about personnel matters. So I wouldn't want CGC to listen to me even if that were a possibility.

But I have a very hard time thinking of anything Patenaude was responsible for last year that actually worked well. I am willing to give him more time, for sure. But if I were CGC he'd be on a short rope.

By way of counter-example, did you think CPJ had too much patience, or too little patience, when it came to replacing DC's?

I think our defense had a player personnel problem during his time, and I have evidence to support that, so the identity of the DC was not my primary worry. I also think the defensive players had too few practice reps over their college lifespan against offenses they would typically face for them to be truly instinctive in live games.

With that said, I think a root problem with the last HFC is he did not have an underlying defensive philosophy that carried forward from year to year. The DC's could just run whatever. So one year we ran a 4-3. The next a 3-4. One year we'd have a complex Groh defense, and then we'd change it before it was mastered and ran something completely different. This is begging for a lack of continuity on defense, and that is what we suffered. While this is similar to saying we changed DC's too often, it is not identical.

It appears the current coach has an underlying philosophy on both offense and defense, so I am confident the offense will come around as we get the horses in place to successfully implement his offensive philosophy. We had no offensive line and a freshman quarterback and a lack of fitting pieces at wr and rb and a quest to rediscover what a te was or did, and they all were trying to implement a completely different offense. I am amazed we did as much offensively as we did.

You can scapegoat the OC if you want, but all you are doing is scapegoating. The problems were underlying. I personally think scapegoating is abhorrent and will often rise in opposition to it. Sorry if my doing so offends some of you.
