Chan\'s offense

In the you have to be careful what you ask for category...and now that we have Chan in complete control of the offense...here is where we stand nationally after 3 games:

(out of 117 teams)
Rushing Offense 90th
Passing Offense 102nd
Total Offense 112th
Scoring Offense 103rd

Hard to argue with his consistency....

IF TECH IS PLAYING, BET THE UNDER!!!

The only game in the Gailey era that has been over was that debacle in Athens last November, and if we hadn't quit that one would've been under as well.

Here's the team total total defense rankings of our opponents.
31 - Auburn
63 - FSU
67 - BYU

Beeware, while I certainly don't agree with people bashing Gailey at every chance they get, I think it is obvious to everyone that we aren't going to win that many games if we can't score more than 17 points.

I did like the playcalling in the Auburn game though. We might've only scored 17, but that was not the Chan I've seen in the past.

Hopefully the team will continue to improve and as they do, I'm sure these numers will go up.

If we're ranked that poorly at the end of the year (which I don't think we'll be) I think there may be a lot more people calling for Gailey's head.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">These stats plus the defensive standings of #31 (Auburn), #63 (Florida State), #67 (BYU) are sobering news indeed. Adds credence to what I have been trying to say. Maybe I am not as big of an idiot as I thought I was.

Re: Chan\'s offense

Hard to score when you can't pass. Hard to pass when you can't run. Hard to run when you got no running backs. We need talented running backs.

Re: Chan\'s offense

We won't stay down that low for a couple of reasons. 1 is that the defenses we'll see from here on out (w possible exception of Ga) aren't as good as those we've seen so far. 2 is that as Ball gets more comfortable and we can add more variety to the offense we'll pick it up.

Re: Chan\'s offense

#23 Georgia Tech A=81.03 W-1 L-2
Sched 83.75 Rank(4) vs Top 10|: 0-1
vs Top 30|: 1-1
Sagarin

that "rank" thing, means we have the number 4 schedule in the nation, as computed by Sagarin

i think that is relevant

whaa whaa we dont have a high-falutin O, we've only blocked a punt, gone for it AND MADE IT TWICE ON a fake punt (name the last one before those...)

with the defense that we have, i could see us winning all but maybe 2 with 17 points

mind you, we would have beaten FSU with 17

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">All good points.

Though I will say that 17 might still not have been enough Saturday night. We'll never know.
If a loss is ever good, that was it.

Our D is good but the depth will catch up as the season wears on. I'd be a lot more confident if we could start scoring just one more touchdown a game.

Like I said - good point about the schedule. If we could've held onto the ball against BYU we'd be 2-1 and there would probably be a LOT less complaining.

Ok, not exactly a first for him.

chilidog:|

man, im with you

we left 14pts on the floor in Provo,
and i thought the negated fumble when
we rocked their QB might have been a turning
point

but i have looked at the tapes, and the
schemes are NFL quality on both sides of
the ball; ditto for the Auburn game. say
what you want, those are still 300lb
lineman and a 250lb RB!

Reggie ia learning on every series with
a near-undefeated college D1 QB in his
ear.

Tenuta is baking doughnuts for everyone
- and IMO the Jackets are the hardest-
hitting D in all of the ACC.

Chan is honest about the state of the
team, we need a few more guys to beat
the 3-deep teams, NOT because we lost
em, or because Chan couldnt get em, but
because we've NEVER gotten em. THAT IS
THE TRUTH!

i will relish it when all the "crappy"
recruiting classes start winning ACC
titles, and all those "2-star", non-
Georgia players start knockin in the heads
of BullDawgs

and what then will be the next avenue
of attack against Coach Gailey??

the sad part to me, Chili, is that i think
that even if we were 3-0, that THEY WOULD
BE COMPLAINING AND POLLUTING JUST AS MUCH
- to me that is truly sad

Re: Chan\'s offense

Just for a little bit of fun - or maybe stated as a bit of fair balance - someone want to put forth the defensive stats?

You can focus wherever you want to find the bad - if that happens to be what you are bound and determined to focus on

Re: Chan\'s offense

JJacket, just to be fair and keep it balanced, the only thing left out of the defensive rankings were the pass defense statistics.

We are 61 in pass defense, however, that is better than several years ago when we were 117 in pass defense.

Re: Chan\'s offense

Now that all of the stats are out....

how did we go from a defense that couldn't stop my grandmother, God rest her soul, to an offense that can't break 20 points?

Kind of ironic considering what O'Leary and Gailey are known for. Just an interesting observation, nothing more than that so don't read anything into it.

Re: Chan\'s offense

check my link above

FSU #10 in total defense
AU #14 in total defense

Re: Chan\'s offense

I am not trying to Gailey bash here, but the results speak for themselves. We need to get better on offense. If you hold your opponent to 14 points or less, you should win period and I don't care who you are playing. Sure Reggie is a freshman, but he is a much better QB than the QBs on a lot of the teams ranked above us in scoring and total offense. In this particuar case, I just don't buy the "freshman QB" excuse.

That being said, I am not sure I have a good answer for how we can get better. I like a lot of what I saw on offense from a play calling standpoint with the exception of the run off tackle on 3rd & 12 when our defense really needed a rest. I liked the way we used the play fake and misdirection on our runs. In the passing game, we looked great in the first half. In the second half, it looked like they focused on taking Jonathan Smith away and no one else could get open or just did not have time. Although we are much better off at QB than we thought we would be, I am afraid we are not as good on the OL or at WR as thought we were. In general the OL has played pretty well, but has been spotty at times failing at critical times both in the passing and running games. We need to be more consistent in this area. I am confident that we will see improvement once we have Leon back full time, but I am more concerned about WR. IMHO, we should give Dunlap a shot since we are not redshirting him. I really thought he outplayed some of the people above him in practice and I really like his physical style of play. Of course if Levon Thomas could just solve his catching problem it would be a major boost to our offense.

I hope the guys on offense take inspiration from their defensive colleagues because if we can get our offense going and avoid injuries we could really have a very good season.
