Classy guy: Gailey honors commitment to Lunch Bunch after dismissal

I would like to hear what he has to say there as well.

But, that is really classy of him.

Man I love the excitement that is coming with all of this but I still respect Chan Gailey. I hate that things had to go this way but its for the best and I salute his class and upright nature in this whole thing. Totally commendable.

God bless, Gailey... Hope you do well wherever you end up.

THWG!

There are not many like him anymore. He is addressing the GT faithful there now.

Wow, a heckuva guy, this is simply unbeleivable...and the reason I supported him so long. It's hard to fire guys like Gailey.

Yea, That's class. Say what you want about his coaching, bu you can't deny him this.

I was there, just got back. He spoke for about 2 mins. Entered the podium to a full oviation (half standing). I will try to remember a few points:

1- Basically said thankyou and goodbye.
2- Hopes he left the program in a better position than when he got there
3- Gave it his all but he didnt win as many games as he (or anyone) wanted to.
4- Tried his best to represent Tech well by having character players who played their buts off every week.
5- Understood it is a business decision
6- Said he wanted to come by and honor his speaking enagagement but was just going to be a minute

Thats all i can remember, i think that covers most of it.
He left to a FULL standing oviation with many people shaking his hand and wishing him well. I am not exactly the president of his fan club but this was a CLASS act.

I definitely respect the man. What must have been going through his mind at Lunch Bunch today...

Although I imagine he is highly disappointed, I have to think that he had 4 million things going through his head today...He is definitely getting a soft landing.

dont know if it is better than we he arrived but nice for him to show up

It IS better because there are some good QB prospects in the pipeline, and because there are not 10+ players poised to flunk out because the academic advisors have been told by the head coach to load all the easy courses up front so the player can remain eligible as long as possible (or because there are very few "exceptions" on the football team as compared with GOL's last four recruiting classes).

Now let's see what the new guy can do!

Chan is all class, through and through. I think he knew he was gone after the game Sat., and took the blame and said the kids played hard but it was "his job" to prepare them and he did not do that job, even tho this may not have been true. He then added that UGA was the most important game, something he was reluctant to do in the past.

I'm glad he showed up but if this is in his contract than I suppose he is obligated to do so as long as he is still under said contract. Perhaps not showing up would be grounds for dismissal [and avoidance of the buyout] but I'm honestly not sure... someone else may know the contractional situation better...

Either way I hope the knew HC takes after Chan in how he represents the Institute.

that is correct...he apologized for not beating UGA.

He was emotional from what I understand. He really did love Georgia Tech...and more importantly each of his players.

I agree regarding his love for his players... this is something that really came across in that post-game interview, which had a feeling of finality to it in my ears. It's unfortunate the situation didn't work out with CCG, but the damage had already been done regarding the fragmented/angry/unhappy fan base.

In the press conference, D-rad specifically said Chan took it well and "understood there was a business aspect to it." -- it's clear that this decision was based on more than what happened on the field..... although I suppose the fan reaction was largely determined by our performance.

This is not exactly true. Don't reinvent the wheel. The real truth is Chan let someone tell him that he did not have to be involved academics instead of himself. It is not unusual for athletes to be borderline due to the time commitments. I feel I have some insight into this because my son is a college athlete. As a coach of any program you have to keep your pulse on this or you will have kids flunk out. Sometimes they are the bigtime kids sometimes they are the second team guys. It is part of the job.

Seriously, who would think anything less of Chan? His character has never been in question.

It's sad that things did not work out for Chan at Tech or Dallas. He goes out as a winner at both places.

It's time for the board bickering to stop now and for Tech to be movin' on up.

Do you think that it had anything to do with him being contractually bound to show up?
