For the nine years from 1920-1928, GT football posted a record of 59-17-7, which included 3 one-loss seasons and 1 undefeated season. Then in 1929 & 1930, we went 5-12-1. What was the cause?

At the annual football banquet after the 1930 season, Coach Alexander "pointed out that this undoubtedly was caused by a lack of the traditional spirit. He blamed campus politics for the spiritual decay. Then for the first time in Tech football history the head coach announced that no election of football captain would be held by the letter winners. He proclaimed that all would report for spring practice on an equal basis and that in the fall a captain would be elected from those eligible for the team." Moreover, the athletics board fired half the coaching staff (including GT great Bill Fincher) and hired (among others) Bobby Dodd.

I for one think maybe "campus politics," "spiritual decay" and "a lack of the traditional spirit" are responsible for our 2017 woes. As for staff changes... well, I'll forward this to CPJ for his consideration.

PS. Sadly, our woes continued for a half-dozen more years. We didn't have another winning season until 1937.
