Coach Johnson mentioned Ole Miss on

I guarrantee you that if there is 2 unbeaten teams from the other big 4 conferences (from a combination of either Pac 10, Big 10, Sec, or Big 12 coming up with 2 unbeatens) and then you have an unbeaten team from the ACC .. The ACC team will not be in the BCS championship game...
And if that's the case, then scheduling better OOC opponents won't help us anyway.

If we go unbeaten and win the ACCCG, we will have a win over Georgia, which will be as much OOC "credit" as we can possibly get anyway. It's DUMB to schedule YET ANOTHER good OOC opponent. There's NO BENEFIT for it, especially after the BCS changed their formula when Auburn was held out.

Auburn went undefeated, played 4 COMPLETE PATSIES out of conference, two of which were Div II schools, and were held out. The BCS changed the formula so that if someone did what Auburn did, they'd get in now, with the revised formula. That, therefore, is the clear and direct path to the National Championship. Win your conference, go undefeated, beat 4 patsies, cash in on the formula. It's in the math.

Hell, by virtue of us playing UGA OOC, we're guaranteed to have a better SOS than Auburn had.

The absolute perfect OOC game is a home and home with a bad team from a BCS conference. Mississippi State is a perfect OOC opponent. Someone we should beat, but isn't considered a patsy by the media.

Rutgers would be a perfect OOC opponent.

UCLA would be a perfect OOC opponent.

Arizona State would be a perfect OOC opponent.

Starting to see a trend?

Damn, if you think HDN is a good coach you have been rooting for Tech too long.

Yeah, he's a good coach.

I agree, I don't want to schedule top 5 teams but would like to hit recruiting areas of teams that may be in middle to upper tier.

You've got to think business-wise if you're the AD, like D-RAD.

Making it more practical for us to get into a BCS game scheduling OOC teams like Rutgers/Temple/Ole Miss/Vanderbilt etc... whom you probably should BEAT, gets you more BCS points and an easier road to the BCS land... something we've only sniffed once.

The only problem with scheduling patsies is money and exposure. The overall record will benefit from playing weak teams, but the school might not. Big names fill stadiums. Rutgers will not give us a full stadium on a Saturday. Auburn will. I also don't like the idea of scheduling games just to get a win. Ohio State had made that their modus operandi for the past few seasons, and after the latest debacle they probably will go back to it. I don't think that filling up on cupcakes will get you very tough. That said, if scheduling a school that fields a bunch of retards humping doorknobs as their team helps us win the game after Thanksgiving, then I'm all for it.

I found CPJ's scheduling philosophy pretty interesting. He said that while he was at Navy, he always wanted to play 4 teams they were better than, 4 that were about equal, and 4 teams that were better than them. As an independent it as much easier to do that, since you don't have to worry about conference schedules.

just thought that was cool

I think we should play 3 tough OOC games and 1 tune up game each year.

1-We will get higher profile recruits if we play several National games each year. Big time recruits want to play in Big time games.
2-More tickets sold, more TV, more exposure = more $$$
3-Winning big games moves you up the rankings and losing a big game doesnt drop you that far.
4-Prepares the team for tough conf games and UGA.
5-Offseason workouts have more enthusiasm when big games are on the early schedule.

I like that too

It is only going to get worse. Teams just are not going to want to play us with our offense. But we should play anybody anywhere. UT? UT? UCLA. Michigan 2 for 1? Ohio State 2 for 1? take em.

Nothing like delusional arguments over Tech's schedule and the National Championship.

We can't even beat UVA in Charlottesville for crying out loud. Yet we have people making serious cases for and against the BCS championship.

Lets try beating Georgia for once and then we'll worry about all the other minutiae.

 If you fail to plan then you plan to fail.

I just want to know what happened to the "we're superior to the whole universe" SEC mentality. What gives? Are they scared to play a little ole mid-tier team from the All Cupcake Conference?

More wins = higher rank = better recruits = beat Georgia.

Easy wins = more time to rest = yet more wins = even higher rank = better recruits = beat Georgia.

Backing out of the games and moving them back to a later date are two different things. Army backed out.. OleMiss is wanting to delay the playing of the games. This may lead to them backing out later on, but as of now they still want to play the home and home series. Will be interesting to see how this develops.

Agreed. Because its a delay, it may just be a scheduling conflict

his radio show last night. Ole Miss. had called Drad and they are trying to back out of the 2 game series we have scheduled with them in 2010 & 2011...I guess Ole Miss. and Houston Nutt want no part of P.J.

UT is the only Sec team that regularly schedules good non-conference opponents. Ugag had scheduled Az. State several years back, BEFORE Dennis Erickson arrived, no way they would have scheduled AZ. State once Erickson got there last year.

I hope Drad is pursuing UT for 2010 & 2011... Or maybe a good Big 12 or Big 10 opponent..

Thoughts?

I love it when this board goes after UGA's OOC schedule.
We play 4 out of the current top 10, all but one away from Sandford.
The reason our OOC looks weak: 14 out of 17.

I would like to play top-tier teams personally. It is all sports entertainment and nothing entertains me more than when Tech plays a top 10 team, especially at home, under the lights. It brings national exposure and gets Corso and Herbie talking about the Jackets. If we really think we're good enough to be a top team then we should prove it by beating top teams. Sadly, there is no team in the ACC that fits that bill right now. We do play UGA, which is good(as long as we win from time to time), but another top-flight team would be a big treat for the fans and players. I think if you lose to an upper-tier team then you will be forgiven, because they are better, but if you beat them, then everyone loves you(at least for that week). Recruits want to play these kind of games, so I don't see how it can hurt in recruiting unless you get embarassed. However, if we trust our team and trust our coach to prepare and play well, then these games would be great for GaTech.

Yeah, but doesn't better competition make your team better?

See UF, LSU in 2006, 2007.

F that. We shouldn't be on the wrong end of any 2 for 1. We're not MTSU.

Until we get things rolling, I'm sure DRad is more interested in padding our wins so that we can make a better bowl (east coast) than he is worried about making up a tenth of a BCS point.

Here is another potential scheduling idea laced in the theme of UGA and GT both hating the Labor Day game sponsored by Chick Fil A. Play that game, every year, in the Georgia Dome on Labor Day Weekend .

Don't like this idea at all, I love playing this game over Thanksgving. Something about cold weather and being outside, rather than the 'Jock Jams' culture of the dome.
