Coach Key Weekly Press Conference

“Apparently” is doing a ton of work there and IMO, it is basically a lie, given the emphasis the reporter put on it. Ken is gas lighting

I’m sure we are doing stuff a little different and I hope it is more effective than what Collins was doing.

What is funny, is Key gave an answer earlier in the conference that practice is practice and not anything special. I think he meant, it isn’t rocket science. You do your drills and you practice at a high level but there are no tricks to it; no tricks to getting better.
yeah , but doing it at a "high level" just means you get hugs for participating

Trying to revolutionize coaching. Probably something about not wanting the players to get injured during practice and they'd be healthier and more refreshed and getting more guys reps, blah blah bullshit. What's mind boggling to me is that he didn't think to change up the approach when it clearly wasn't working.
He could not and probably still can not admit he was wrong. In addition, he had little financial incentive to change.

That is typically what gets coaches fired. Inability to recognize when they need to make changes. I do believe that Collins was stubborn and arrogant and wouldn’t change. He was an inexperienced HC that didn’t know what he didn’t know.

Agreed.

Reading between the lines of Key's public statements so far, it seems like practices are different now and there is likely more emphasis placed on taking practice seriously (he has talked multiple times about practicing how you play), but at no point did he ever say or imply that practices under Collins didn't involve pads or full speed drills.

If anything, he said the opposite -- as you alluded to, he outright said there were not major structural changes to practices.

Yeah, I’ve heard Saban say the same thing. Make practice like a game so when the lights are on it isn’t anything they can’t handle. It sounds like we were doing the opposite under the other guy. That explains a lot about how our players reacted during games when breaking up passes down 20 plus. They were all playing to the lights. You never see Bama do that type of stuff because their training sets the mindset that a game is nothing but another practice.

One does wonder... if we interpret Key's words the way it looks like he meant it, and players weren't practicing in full pads and starter against starter, then how on earth was CGC deciding who was "above the line?"

I think I know the answer and it's sooo cringe.

This also explains why CGC always had a stat about someone's GPS tracker saying they broke the school zone speed limit in practice, yet we looked like cold molasses on the field.

He makes eye contact and does not look down in shame…. That’s amazing!

Interesting when responding to the question on how the players have adjusted to the coaching shake up he repeatedly said "one-time" referring to players showing up to meetings, practice, etc. You wonder if that wasn't happening with the previous leadership.
I took it as players are responding to the coaching change by staying committed to team and still showing up. as in, no defectors that are upset with change and quiet quitting. if you're interpretation is right, makes me even more relieved CGC gone.

I took it this way as well. Everyone showed back up to do work and fight for GT.

Structural could be how many practice periods there are and how long each period is, plus, keeping practice in the morning, and what you do on certain days - hit on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, shells on Thursday, walk through or other on Friday.
But how those periods are conducted and what is transferred from coaches to players, my guess, is different.

Usually, that's for the position coach to determine. But, as is being intimated that Clown was trying to coach everything, maybe the final list was his doing.

You don’t have to really guess what practices were. They continually put these little videos out and it was always a bunch of the same stuff. It always looked like they were trying setups for highlight reel plays so everyone could whoop and yell about it and they could put it in slow motion on Instagram.
