I am loving the way he conducts himself. He seems to really tell it like it is and not hee-haw and beat around the bush like our former coach.

Exhibit A:

“It’s usually been my take that I’ll let guys start where they want to,” Johnson said. “Then we’ll look at them, and I may say, ‘You have a better chance to play (on a regular basis) over here.’ “

Johnson flashed a quick smile, before adding, “Now if they’d rather be third string somewhere else, then more power to them. You know?”

(AMEN! If you don't like it, get the hell out!)

“We’ll get them together (next week), and I’ll start going over MY way of doing things,” Johnson said, with his way of suggesting the following to Tech players about that upcoming meeting and those afterward: Don’t show up if you (ahem) prefer not to hear the truth.

I agree that it is refreshing, but why did Moore suggest that Gailey was the same way?

Gailey said what he thought, he just wasn't able to accomplish as much as we would have liked.

Instead, we were left with mind-numbing thoughts such as this one from October:

Do you change your tendencies with Patrick Nix now on the other sideline? In what way? How much does he know?

"Yes. Some of all of that. We will change some things because we know what he knows. But he probably knows that he knows what we know so he will probably assume that we'll change it.

"He knows the signals. But we've changed quite a few too, so he doesn't know them all, but he knows some of them. He also knows that we knows that he knows some of them."

Well, I said he said what was on his mind. I didn't say it made sense.

I know you believe you understand what it is you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what I said is not what I meant.

Haha, I forgot about that quote. I really did laugh out loud just now after reading it.

If you guys want to hear more from CPJ, here is an interview with him after I think Spring Practice while he was at Navy.
Some comments that stood out:

Johnson: You have a lot of young guys that are going to be challenging and it gives you a chance to watch the young guys and see who steps up and who you can count on. Coming out of morning workouts there are a couple of young guys that I was really counting on that I'm disappointed in. I don't know if they can play for us. I don't know if they are tough enough. They give up awfully easy.

Johnson: Yeah, this is their first time. Some of them think their hurt. Nobody just quits, they think their hurt. Their vision of being hurt and my vision of being hurt are not the same.

And, showing his sense of humor:

Wagner: Did you time anybody under 4.6?
Johnson: Oh yeah.
Wagner: Who?
Johnson: I could tell you, but I would have to kill you.

Hahaha. I defended Gailey before, and I will defend him in the future when he warrants it too, but this was damn funny.

Love this exchange...

Socci: Have any college teams contacted you about coming in to learn the option?

Johnson: We've had a few. Bucknell is here today.

Socci: Did you guys visit anybody?

Johnson: We went to West Virginia the first of this week. I went with the offensive coaches up there and the defensive coaches went to New England and visited with Coach Belichick. They did that last year. This is the first time we've visited anywhere on offense. We went to just look around and see how they did things.

Masisak: Should we expect you to line up in the shotgun in the first game?

Johnson: Yeah, we are going to dump our offense.

Wagner: I hesitate to ask this because I know what the answer is going to be, but is there any particular area that is a concern?

Everybody: All of them.
Johnson: You know what the answer is.

Capt. Amazing: I knew you couldn't change.
Casanova Frankenstein: I knew you'd know that.
Capt. Amazing: Oh, I know that. AND I knew you'd know I'd know you knew.
Casanova Frankenstein: But I didn't. I only knew that you'd know that I knew. Did you know THAT?

I liked this:

"Sewak, Bohannon, Monken and Smith worked together on Johnson's staff at Georgia Southern. Sewak was called "offensive coordinator" on that staff, but Johnson had nobody with that job in his six seasons at Navy and made the same choice at Tech. "It's not fair to give them the title and let everybody yell at them when I'm doing it," he said."

I like this tidbit:

"Everybody will be coaching special teams with the exception of maybe the quarterbacks coach," Johnson said.

Also, glad to see Nathan Burton is still there as a grad assistant.

Get ready for a quick tempo in practice and get ready for more gems like that from Johnson. When the team doesn't play well, he's madder than a wet hen. But he'll blame himself and the staff first.
His MO at Georgia Southern was to give the players written tests on Fridays on their assignments on plays.

I'm absolutely giddy at what Paul Johnson's done so far.

You're not kiddin' beej. Saturdays were pretty exciting at Paulson Stadium ten years ago - I'm looking forward to more of the same in the future at BDS.

"It doesn't make any sense to me to fly over 4 million people unless you're going to get somebody who's better than is here," Johnson said, adding that he'll take advantage of coaches' backgrounds in Texas and Pennsylvania but focus tightly on Georgia and neighboring states.
There's one exception to that recruiting philosophy.
"We'll probably recruit quarterbacks nationally," he said. "It's a position we have an advantage at. A lot of schools will recruit dual threat quarterbacks as wide receivers. We'll offer them a chance to play quarterback."

Does anyone remember Tracy Ham? Same story. BTW- Tracy is now in the college football Hall Of Fame. After GSU he went to the CFL winning a Grey Cup and the MVP of the league one year. CPJ knows talent at QB!!

Now that the dust has settled in the staff selection, does anyone think that there is any base which is either not covered well or not covered as well as it was before?

I'm not asking about Wommack vs Tenuta or Johnson vs Gailey. I'm asking about everyone else. I've read up on everyone's resume but resumes don't really tell me very much. What I find helpful is, for example, coach X coached DBs at U of X and U of X led the country in interceptions when he was there.

Where I'm going with this is: some coaches assemble staffs of renown coaching ability without regard to their personal network and others reach into their past to assemble their staff. Clearly CPJ has opted to do the latter (past coaches with whom he has worked) with one or two exceptions. I don't have an opinion on any of the assistants he has chosen - they all look good on paper.

What does the class think are the highlights of the staff? Who will be the best assistants? Which coaches are/will be substantial upgrades?

Obviously, having a true QB coach represents a quantum upgrade from Gailey. Other positions I have been worried about are receivers, DBs and OL coach. Unlike some, I was not a big fan of our OL coach.

If this has already been covered, I apologize, I have not been able to keep up with the board lately.
