2008 Georgia Tech Coaching Staff
Paul Johnson (Head Coach)
Brian Bohannon (Quarterbacks/B-Backs Coach)
Brian Jean-Mary (Linebackers Coach)
Charles Kelly (Cornerbacks Coach)
Jeff Monken (Slot Backs Coach/Special Teams Coordinator)
Buzz Preston (Wide Receivers Coach)
Mike Sewak (Co-Offensive Line Coach)
Giff Smith (Defensive Line Coach/Recruiting Coordinator)
Todd Spencer (Co-Offensive Line Coach)
Dave Wommack (Defensive Coordinator)

We don't have an offensive coordinator. That probably explains the two O-line coaches.

Did we have TWO OLine coaches before?

What will often happen in these cases is one coach will take the Ts & TEs, the other the Cs & Gs, or it might be split between Strong & Weak Side.... in any case, there is a lot more individual attention given to technique, footwork, and assignments.

In short, you tend to have fewer blown assignments, fewer penalties - I swear it wasn't a GT FB game without a certain departing un-named OL getting his mandatory 15 yard holding/tripping/personal foul penalty - etc.

Usually one OL coach works the booth, the other the sideline. Given Sewak & Spencer's backgrounds with CPJ, and per the USNA Press Guide, Spencer's "Known for his intensity on the field..." I'd expect Sewak in the booth & Spencer on the sidelines.

Only 8 more months til fall practice!

I guess I'm having a brain fart and missing something, but what is "B-Backs" Coach??? Or is that supposed to be running backs coach??

Sounds good. The only strange thing is that Bohannon is coaching both B-Backs AND QB's. That seems like a weird combination. Maybe CPJ will coach QB's as well. Also, I'm guessing Wommack will coach safeties, since Kelly is listed as coaching Cornerbacks and not DB's or secondary.

But calling the position a "fullback" is misleading because the position is really a big tailback who can easily get 25 carries per game, and at this level that could be used against us.

I googled and apparently it comes from calling the three backs A-B-C, where the slotbacks are A and C, in the same way that the LB's are called Sam-Mike-Willie.
It is not a recruiting thing. The A backs are the slots & the B back is the fullback. This is the terminology used. Yes, the A's can be called slots and the B's fullbacks but don't say it's for recruiting. I've been around the offense for 18 years (give or take) and they've always referred to the players by A's or B's. You'll be hearing from me "the A's make the plays" a lot during the season. Their ability to block, run & receive make them the most diverse & exciting group in the offense. Don't get me wrong, the QB is key and the B back will get a load of carries but the A's will be the guys breaking off the big gainers to the perimeter.

I think most understand that the B-Back is the same thing as the fullback. I do think it is interesting that they changed the title from Fullback Coach as he has used at Navy to B-Back coach. I would not be surprised if the nomenclature change was simply to have the question asked "what is a b-back" so they can show the current player/recruit that this is "not your grandmothers fullback". At GT, the FB ran it about as often as a solar eclipse...in this offense they can get 15-20 carries per game. It is essentially a big tailback. Heck...they get tackled almost every play whether they have the ball or not...or sometimes sneak right down the middle of the field for a long pass!

I think it is possible both of you are correct!! ;)

Anyone know why they switched Kelly to c-backs coach? He did a great job in turning the special teams around this year.

I'm guessing it's because they've already got a really good ST coach coming in from Navy, and they wanted as many returning coaches as possible on the defensive side of the ball, to shore up D recruiting.
