Re: Johnson D-Day (Afternoon Updates 12/5)
While we all sweat and fret, USA Today had a number of articles (including page 1) on the rapid escalation of college coaching salaries. Here's the link:
http://www.usatoday.com/s...-pay_N.htm
The article links to the coaching salary database. There is also an article on West Point refusing to turn over their data.
Items of interest:
1. PJ's salary is listed as $1.05 mil. The footnotes indicate that this is last year's salary and they get the data from the NAAA tax return. We won't know his exact salary for this year until USA Today publishes this same study next year, but the $1.4 mil figure cited by some on the board should be in the ballpark.
2. Other salaries of interest - Duke $544K, SMU $517K, GT $1.04 mil (those numbers actually make me feel better).
3. PJ is one of 50 coaches out of 120 Division 1A coaches making more than $1 mil.
4. The article on West Point indicates that PJ's salary is paid out of the nonprofit NAAA. Interestingly, both West Point and Air Force appear to mix both appropriated fund monies (i.e. taxpayer money) with their nonprofits.
A couple of observations/opinions:
1. As discussed last night in another thread, the PJ factor has added huge $$$$ to the NAAA coffers through increased ticket sales and TV revenues.
2. For those that think we shouldn't chase PJ with money, wake up. That's the playing field we're operating under.
3. I for one am thankful that we face this problem every year. That means we have a successful coach and a successful program. Consider the alternative.
Bottom line - we can compete in this market, folks!! I have confidence that Chet will step up to the plate and do everything in his power to keep PJ.
