I feel we have enough of a sample size to talk about what we like about the deffense. I’m not an expert by any means.

I like our run stopping and blitzing but we are still weak when the Qb decides to run.

And we need much better DB play. It will take a couple of years for woody to get his recruiting going(feel like we said that about roof though).. regardless I feel this is our weekday spot.

It was posted earlier but how many went down of deffense yesterday?

Deffense?

We have a style that people will want to play for. Athletic LB will want to come to our school again. Hopefully we get some because we need them.

Our defense gave up 3 points in the 1st half and created a ton of negative plays. One of the better halves of defense we’ve had in recent history.

Second half they played well too. Gave up two deep throws that were honestly covered pretty well - WR just made a play both times.

I’m happier with the defense now than I was a year ago. And you’d think they’d keep improving as Woody can install more blitzing packages. So optimistic about them not being a liability anymore.

To me, the biggest two improvements for this defense vs. prior is the scoreboard and negative plays. The yards between the 20s still seem to be porous, but the team does pretty well in the red zone. The negative plays are also up - lots of more QB hurries and we are doing well on turnovers. Saint-Amour is having a really great season and the secondary is playing at a higher level than I would have expected. Linebacker play is a little weak.

I think it's obvious the D is improved. It will be nice to put two good halves together but Rome wasn't built in a day. That Miamah offense is straight garbage though so as long as we keep the turnover chain in the box, I like our chances.

Special props to Anree Saint Amour and Brandon Adams. IMO the two best playmakers on D!

My take:
-The defensive line is playing really well. They may be the best position group on our team right now.
- LBs are getting much better at run fits, still seem to struggle in space and with coverage assignments. OLBs are further along than ILBs, but both groups are streaky as hell.
- DBs are young, so I'm not sure why we would expect any different. The corners don't seem like great fits for the scheme and might not be fast enough. They didn't have a good game yesterday, but it *might* have been their best so far.
- Playcalling is Tenuta level, execution isn't there yet. We seem to play into scripted series by OCs, but execute better and blitz into the right gaps once in a game rhythm. Inherent to the scheme is that sometimes we're going to run ourselves away from the play by overloading the "wrong" side. We need to do a better job of limiting big plays in those situations.

Overall, I think this defense is finally a good fit for what we do offensively and the type of players we recruit. If we can continue to improve execution, we have a pretty high ceiling on defense.

Grades

DL: A. Constant pressure. Big jump in improvement from ASA and Adams. We as deserve ASA for one more year. KCH and Branch have good as well. STILL HAVE YET TO BE PUSHED AROUND

ILB: D+. Yesterday appeared to be one of their better games but doesn’t make up for the season. A lot of bad mistakes made by this group and don’t have a real feel for the game. Production shows that this group is letting us down

OLB: C. This was bumped up with the emergence of Charlie Thomas. Maybe only behind Carpenter for GT ROY. Johnson has been ok. Inconsistent but makes play on occasion

Safeties: B-. Very steady group. Malik Rivera has been solid all season and Carpenter has been a monster!!! Struggles in man coverage, but possess all the tools and swagger you look for in NFL caliber P5 SS. This is one player Rivals rating was completely wrong on.

CB: C-. This is probably the 2nd most frustrating group on the defense. Below avg tacklers when we are giving a cushion and below avg ball skills. Every last one of those deep balls were underthrown and would’ve been a PBU or an INT from most good CBs

Overall: C+. This is all what GT fans asked for. High risk/ high reward defense and CNW has delivered. Currently 43rd overall in team defense and #10 overall with 23 turnovers created. Still lots of room for improvement but we are headed in the right direction
