D-Line winning in practice

Every year, defensive lines dominate early everywhere.

It usually levels out by the start of the season, but this year is different. No one has time for their offense to catch up before the season starts.

My issue with our line is not the quality of the first string, but uncertainty about the line's depth. We will see our depth on the field this season, as truncated practices are not best for keeping people healthy. We will see what we really have the last third of the season.

None of this is particularly special to GT. Quality defensive linemen are not plentiful, and a lot of big-name recruits never pan out. So lines tend to be thin on defense but deeper on offense.

Techbert,
happy to see who is on the field against FSU no matter what

Lead sharpens lead. at the end of the day, you don't know how sharp your knife is until you cut something made out of something else. I'm not afraid of Florida State. I don't think our guys are either. Honestly, their defense is stout but their offense is suspect. If we can draw blood in the first quarter, I like our chances a lot.

Coach Pat will be on display in this game. There are many he needs to impress.
Your point is well taken... but I don't think lead sharpens lead.

Ryan Johnson is better (probably by far) than anyone we had last year. Cooper is back healthy. Quinney and Defoor have game experience and have bulked up a bit. Thacker says Jordan Williams has been a beast (for a freshman). I think the OL has progressed from gawd awful to middle of the pack. If our RBs are the above average I think they are, we should be able to move the ball on the ground more often than not.

When the Vandy transfer passed, the total quality for this yr's group dropped a lot.Sort of like our bellcow ,Shaq ,leaving and then what the '15 OL looked like. Otoh--it couldn't be worse than last yr for sure .

I would argue we have one of the best RB groups in the ACC, if not the nation. The OL won’t have to create much for us to move the ball on the ground.

No argument from me. :)
Mason broke tackles on 44% of his rushes last year. That was best in the nation. This year, he won’t be doing it alone.

Not sure about that. For one, he hasn't played a snap. Our all time leader in sacks(Attaochu) also would have something to say about that.
I said may. I hope Clayton has more self control than Attaochu. That VT game was a turning point in our season.

Maybe our line has gone from 130 ranked last year to about 60 this year...but I doubt it.

If our OL has trouble with our DL, I'd worry about them stopping FSU's Marvin Wilson, who is a monster DT.

I'm sure Marvin is okay, but he does not inspire fear in my eyes. In your clip, the first play was against helmets I did not recognize. The second was a coverage sacks at about the 7 second mark of the play... literally. And so on.

Strong, but if all you do is bull rush with no secondary moves you should be controllable. But you can root for Marvin if that is your wont.
