I haven't been impressed with the DC, Dave Wommack since we hired him. Obviously, the blame for hiring Wommack falls solely on CPJ. What are you hiring a guy for that for the past two years was a linebackers coach at South Carolina and then Southern Miss? Hell, he wasn't good enough to be the DC at Southern Miss but he is for us? Geez. I know he had been a DC in the past...but he obviously is/was no top grade defensive coordinator to just be a linebackers coach at Southern Miss....so, why did he hire him as a coach?

I know Johnson hasn't ever felt any heat at Tech before. I do feel like if there had been a game the week after the LSU game, we would have. So it will be interesting to see how he reactes this coming week. There needs to be a sense of urgency in correcting this defense...and I found it hard to believe Dave Wommack is the man for that. (The offense is it's on set of problems in the O-Line, we need to get BIGGER).
Even Ted Roof new how to come with blitz packages.

I feel like someone has posted this before. Not sure who, but I completely agree with you GeorgiaTechFan.

Whether he's the best DC we could hire or not, your description of him and his experience disqualifies you from having an opinion. Do a little research first.

Wommack's defense seems to be built around making INTs. Force the other guy to make 12-15 plays to get to the endzone. But without any pass rush, we a got eaten alive last night. Against Clemson, our rush pissed out in the 2nd quarter.

He has got to blitz more or get someone other than Morgan to pass rush.
I don't think Burnett has played very agressive since he got the cast. That hurts too. Seeing a reciever catch the ball in stride underneath 4 Tech defenders is bad. Seeing that reciever run to the sideline and turn the corner is worsse. That's what both Clemson and Miami did to us.

I think he should have sent Tarrant in from the corner. At least he has the speed to get to the QB before the QB has time to pick out his 3rd option.

Oh, and putting Morgan at LB so that he could exhaust himself was dumb.

I don't think Wommack's schemes are necessarily a problem, our defense has just played like crap. The line hasn't been able to establish the LOS all season or get any penetration to disrupt a run. If you can't do that, anyone can go 20 of 25 passing.

Besides having the Michelin Man and Poppin Fresh for DT's, our OLBs didn't do much last night. I watched them get sucked into the middle and then outflanked by a runner several times last night.

The guy in Morgan Burnett's body needs to give it back to him. Agree that Tarrant hasn't shown us much at corner. I'd sit him down and play Reid.

Are we going nickle in passing situations? Our zone pass defense is terrible, maybe we should just go to man to man and then find out who are the men that deserve to be out there.

As to Wommack, yeah this is a pretty bad product and its not getting any better. Maybe we should try a 3 man front and put another LB out there. I saw blitz several times but the blitzer was neutralized fairly easily. We are not doing very good against the run but we are getting gored worse with the pass and that should be the top priority if we ever expect to hold a D1A opponent under 30 again. We've got to generate some penetration/pass rush before we can start figuring out the secondary.

Having said that, I hope that Miama is as good as they looked. We'll see.

Also, Coach forget working on the cut blocks, our O line needs to spend a couple of hours pushing the sled up and down the field. They need the actual sensation of moving forward against resistance and not just diving at someone's feet or wrastlin with em. Move forward or sit down.

My description of him and experience disqualifies me? Are you kidding? Please explain then, oh great one, as to what I'm missing....Yes, he was the DC for Southern Miss where they were ranked one of the top defenses in the country. That's terrific....he did well defending against teams in Conference USA. He then went to Arkansas where he didnt exactly set the place on fire. He then goes to South Carolina where he is let go after his second year on the staff and it's back to Southern Miss as the linebacker coach. He wasn't good enough to be a coordinator anywhere since Arkansas?

And by the way...below is a link to his "resume" he built at Arkansas...not exactly a top notch job. So, in saying I need to do more research..obviously you already have and feel what he did 10 years ago at Southern Miss qualified him for this job.

Of course Wommack knows more about what he's doing than I do, but X, I didn't get this either.
He was trying to move him around and get him away from the double team. You guys keep talking about trying different things, but when he does everyone wants to jump on that. Our problem is exactly what we thought it might be...the DL is getting owned at the LOS. It's pretty hard to adjust for that but I'm sure we'll see something different, whether it's packages or personnel, going forward.

At least you did a little research. At Arkansas they has a couple of big problems. First, they played some excellent offensive teams during that stretch and as the article said were very short of talent. What the article also leaves out is they played some extremely long OT games in those years, IIRC one 7 OT game and a couple of 4s. Those not only inflate statistics but wear down young, thin teams. The point though is Wommack has been around and has coached some very good defenses (S Miss routinely beat SEC and other BCS teams during his time there). Whether this is on him, or whether we simply don't have the horses is the question in my mind.

If you are mad at Wommack, get mad at CPJ. He's the one who wanted him. He can go tell Wommack to change things up at halftime if he wanted to. CPJ is the head coach, not just the offensive play caller.

It's going to show a lot about CPJ the way he reacts to the Defensive dilemma we're in. The eyes of the GT world are upon you, PJ. I'm not expecting a quick fix, but it better get fixed.

+1, but we need to fix this problem fast. Wommack isn't getting it done. He's got to change something fast or we need to find somebody else at the end of the year. Wommack was my biggest concern at the end of the year last year and remains my biggest concern.

This isn't about having a good scheme and our players not executing. This is about a bad defensive scheme that made no changes to correct itself last night, last week or last year.

I always thought the basic defense philosophy debate was you send a bigger pass rush and risk giving up big plays or you sit back in coverage and give up lots of dink and dunk. His guy has managed to figure out how to do not do either.

As a Tech fan, I couldn't have imagined a game where the QB wasn't touched once AND we didn't have any INTs.
