2005 is in the books and here's a final comparison -
GT - 7-5, 3-2 against final top 25 (W's over Clemson,
Miami, Auburn, L's to UGA, VT)
3 losses to bowl winners not in Top 25 (UVA,
NCSU, Utah)
4 W's over losing teams
UGA - 10-3, 1-3 against final top 25 (W over LSU, L's to
WVU, Florida, Auburn)
3 wins against bowl losers( GT, SC, and
Boise)
6 wins against losing teams

I know the comparison that matters is on the scoreboard the last Saturday in November. Two years in a row we have come just short.

But, my point is to look at the full body of work of these two programs this year. Why is Gailey hated by so many of his own fans, negatively viewed by Atlanta media, and called America's worst coach by SI? Why is Richt beloved by most of his fan base, revered by local media, and considered such a marvelous success?

Tech is a tough place to coach. The fans are super critical. The media is biased toward your rival. Your record outlined above is widely critiqued. The record of your fellow coach 70 miles down the road is praised. The truth is the difference is not as great as the media, Dawg fans, and sadly, even some Tech fans, would have you think.

Terrible offensive performance at the end of the game two straight years - that's how far we are from being absolutely even with or better than the Dawg program.

The GT fans are not super critical. Go to a Miammaa hurricaines game (when they are losing) and you wouldn't beleive it. The Tech fans are generally very willing to have a losing season if they feel things are going on the right track. I think the GT fans were very patient with Curry, Ross and O'Leary as they rebuilt. The fans were not with BL when he dismantled a winner and they haven't been with CG because of: you know, it's talked about on this website everyday...

Without a doubt, UGA is an annual underachiever considering their recruiting prowess and the NFL draft picks that come out of there.

If we had Greene and Shockley the past few years.....you never know.

We have a lot of work to do ourselves...but you have to wonder if you are a UGA fan if you have missed your best opportunities the past two seasons.

Well for one St. Mark (Richt) is loved because he is 5-0 vs his in state rival and in those 5 wins was only behind once!!!! (and that lasted only 3 minutes)

For two, his teams are always in the game (4 point loss to Florida, one point loss to Auburn and 3 point loss to WVU). Tech on the other hand, 44 point loss to VT, 4 point loss to a very average NCST team, 14 point to UVA, 7 to your hated rival, and 28 to a Mountain West No-body!!! You do the math, St. Mark's teams fight and don't give up. Gailey's teams if they get behind by more than 14 points its OVER (only exception was Clemson last year).

CAN THE CHAN!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/behead.gif

Probably bc they have won two SEC championships and been to the SEC championship game 3 out of the last 4. I think UT and UF were picked ahead of them this year, too, in their division while Auburn and LSU were picked ahead of them as well. If GT would win an ACC championship and not lose continually to teams they should beat, things would be different. We beat two top 25 teams this year...caught one very early which was fortunate for us, too. Our inconsitent play is pitiful and you can count on it being there year after year. UGA beats us consistently each year...7 of the last 10 or something like that? A higher ratio if you go back further.

Also, look how our medicore finishes get rewarded at the end of the season...only to lose two of the last recent bowl games to lowly ranked (Fresno)or no where on the radar teams such as Utah by twenty something points (who finished no where in the polls this year). UGA lost to the 4th ranked team in the country this year..by three points.

another good point by crazy4tech.. he mentioned the close losses when compared to ours. I had forgotten their total point loss for the entire season against UF, AU, and WV was eight points (four to UF without their starting qb, one to AU where AU pulled something out of their hat on a 4 and 10 play in the last seconds, and 3 to West Virginia where they were down by 28 points in the first quarter to come back and almost pull it out) We got slaughtered by some big numbers in VT and Utah (again with their back up qb) and others.

Yeah, but the other side of the coin is that UGAy could have very easily lost to MIss St, USC-east, GT, Arkansas. They were sweating some serious bullets late in those games. A few plays here or there and they lose any of those games.

Crazy- Did not know I was making a comparison. I simply stated a fact that they are underachievers considering the talent they have had. That is indisputable.

GeeTee- Have you forgotten I cannot see your posts? I can only assume you wrote "I love Chan Gailey...he is the best coach in the history of the world".

Does anyone think this may be more than just records ?
Look at the personality of each coach
I watched MR interviewed at half time on ESPN and he was great. Have you ever seen Chan talk to a reporter on the sideline ? All I ever hear is his call in radio show and then it is screened
Thier records may be close but thier personalities are miles apart

Hiver, I was not attacking you at all. But I must disagree about Ugag under achieving. Since St. Mark arrived they have won the SEC twice, been to two BCS bowls (one one lost one) and have won 10 games in a season I believe 4 out of his 5 years. If that is under achieving, hell I wish we could under achieve like that. (and throw in never losing to Tech)

...not to mention they have finished in the top 5 the past few years, with a top 10 finish this year. We should be so lucky to compare to them like that.

Not to reroute, but it's admirable for them to think that this year was a down season.

I want this program to set it's bar a lot higher than it is. It's the only way to improve.

This year was supposed to be are-building year for them. Now everyone is saying next year will be
With the recruiting class they have coming in it looks like no problems for at least 8 more years but dont worry, maybe there will be even more toilet bowls to go to bu then

Richt is from the mold of Dooley. Instead of saying this is the most talented team he's ever coached - like Donnan did - Richt is letting everyone think they are in a rebuilding mode. That way, he can win 10 and overachieve. UGAg should never have to rebuild.

Richt dont cry and moan about how great thier competition is
Dooley would have the dognation fearing The Citadel and the fans there still have this attitude

Huh? What do you want them to do - win the NC every year?

They've won the SEC 2 out of the past 5 years and finished in the top 10 3/4 years.

They OVERACHIEVED this year and several other years under CMR. Yea, they have top 15 talent most years but other teams on their schedule do as well.

This was FAR from a re-building year for

the doggies. They had plenty of talent returning and their "new" QB had been in the system for 4 years.

Just another Athens-created hoax for them to be viewed as heading into a "re-building" year this past season. Now, they reach the Sugar bowl, win the SEC in a down year for that league, and everyone piles on Richt more as being the end-all be-all of coaches.

If they repeat as SEC Champs NEXT year, then I'll tip my hat to him.

That said, I'm more concerned about what happens to OUR team. I just had to get that off my chest....

I vote underachieved...

The dawgies had a new starting QB but a solid one nevertheless. They certainly weren't rebuilding and won't be next year.

After winning the SEC they are definitely disappointed to be #10. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crybaby.gif

Re: I vote underachieved...

Correct...DJ Shockley was a Parade All-America.
Also correct that the SEC was weak this year...moreso than the ACC.

Next year will be a true test for them. They are stacked high with future NFL 1st and 2nd rounders...but they will truly have a new QB for the first time.

I remember Corse two years ago saying the HC at Florida was the easiest job in America from the perspective of infrastructure...and UGA was not far behind...because all you had to do was show up and you had the talent...recruiting was easy at those schools because they were in the SEC and the high school systems fed them players regardless who the head coach was. He said it was just a matter of whether you win 7-8 games there...or win 10 or more.

That's a good point, PW. A lot of Tech fans spend so much time looking desperately for some reason to accept our disappointing seasons, and something to criticize the UGA program for, that we end up rationalizing mediocrity.
