How will GT go about making this decision? Will a committee vote on who they deem best for the job or will Dr. Clough make the decision by himself?

Committee. Can't find a link right off hand to who exactly is on it, but I remember seeing a list of the committee members, four or five people if I remember correctly.

Here was my e-mail that I sent to all 5.

Just wanted to drop you a line and give you my feelings on who I would like to see as our new athletic director. I’m not sure how much it will help but I’m hoping that you’re keeping your ear to the ground. I’ll try to keep it short because I know that you are a very busy man at this time. If I am fortunate enough to get a response I will surely expound on my feelings.
At our current juncture, I believe Georgia Tech will benefit greatly from having Bill Curry as our next AD. I am only 28 years old, so I wasn’t around during the controversy of his previous departure but I’m sure Mr. Curry has benefited greatly from these experiences. The main reason that I believe Mr. Curry would be so serviceable is his exposure to the public and his love of Georgia Tech. I truly feel that at this point we need someone to put a face on Georgia Tech athletics and sell our programs.
Obviously, this may not be the vision of the committee but I feel as an alumnus of the greatest school in the world that hopefully my voice will be heard. Thank you for your time.

While I appreciate the enthusiasm, something which is definitely lacking for the most part in the GT fanbase, there is no need to send emails to those one the committee. I'm sure they realize the importance of the issues involved and will make the descision that they feel is in the best interest of GT AFTER all the cards are on the table.

Also, one of these men is a current student, with a lot better things to do than read a bunch of email from fans trying to sway their vote and curry favor (ha!) for one particular candidate. It would be best for all at this time to not get their hearts set on one particular candidate, but wish the best for the program. Don't get involved in backbiting and bitterness that characterize major administration and coaching changes at other schools in the area.

I would encourage you to edit your post and remove their email addresses, just to keep down the amount of spam they get, if nothing else. Those who still wish to email them can look them up in the GT directory on the GT homepage.

To stand idly by and do nothing would be very apathetic. If they didn't want their emails known or hear opinions, then they should have declined the assignment.

Yes, and if you need to send them an e-mail, you can look it up on the GT website. I doubt any of them appreciate spam more than any of us on here. If you have an opinion it is best expressed through a letter, rather than e-mail.

I would be sure to let them know how much you know about the decision process, the candidates, the status of the AA, etc, b/c I'm sure they will be impressed and overwhelmed with your ammassed knowledge of the intracacies of a modern college athletic department. Perhaps they'll invite you to be on the committee.

The GTsports Blog has all the names as well

That may be true, I have no problem with the names being there, but it is not very polite or smart to post someones email address on a public forum, you may enjoy hearing about cheap generic viagra and unbelievable preapproved mortgages but I certainly don't and I'm guessing that these men do not either (though some of these guys are getting up in age, so maybe the former).

As to the other, voice your opinion all you want, but if you think email is an effective means of communicating that I believe you are mistaken, and for two, let the people do their job, if you were appointed to a committee of some sort I'm sure you would love people constantly telling you how they wished you would act, and demonizing you after the fact for making a different choice.

I think that you are mistaking delegation and representation for apathy, if we were all to have our voices heard then everyone with a season ticket could just cast ballots after all the candidates names were in the hat.

Sorry RP, I meant that he listed the names and their titles - didn't mean to give the impression that their email addresses were included. In fact, I don't think Scott put anything about their email addresses in his post. I thought the original intent of this thread was to who was on the committee - and the blog has that info.

Sorry for the confusion!

I think that you take advantage of all the "media" that is out there. That is the scribes, fans, alumni, and lettermen. All of these people have other full time jobs, so what makes them any more special than you or me? I think guys that played for Curry twenty years ago can look back as adults now and say whether he was "right, wrong, or full of crap". That is just one example of information I would want to hear if I were on the committee.

And hey SPB, more than one of the candidates has asked that his/her supporters contact the committee through any means that you are comfortable with.

I hope they will, and they can solicit that information when it comes time that they need it, if they will.

Here are the responses so far. D. Anderson's seems automatically generated but I think Mr. Irwin responded. It also included a phone number which I deleted. I'm considering calling and speaking with Mr. Irwin because shit, why not? He's the alumni assoc. pres. and I'm an alumni. My opinion is valid.

Thanks Christian. The committee is conducting a national search and I’m confident that the candidate chosen will represent Georgia Tech very well. Thanks for your input.

Mr. Horger,

Thank you for your email. Due to the nature of the search, I am not permitted to comment on the search process, but I can promise to pass along the feedback I get from alumni and students like yourself.

Regards,

David

The selection committee doesn't appear to be a very august body, IMO. It smells and looks like a rubber stamp group to me. With all due respect, what can a current GT student be expected to know about running an athletic department? For that matter, except for Clough, who among them has any insight as to what expertise the position of AD requires? I believe that some of the A-T board members, many of whom are very successful business executives in their own right, and who certainly provide a lot of monetary support to the GTAA, should have been included in the process.

All of the search committees include someone from the student body. I believe that there was a student rep on the group when Hewitt and Gailey were selected - part of school by-laws maybe?

I believe the student body president (or perhaps his representative?) has a seat on the GTAA board and the search committees. I think it does a good deal to provide the interviewing coaches with an understanding of the student body and alumni that they would possibly be dealing with, to say nothing of the excellent judgement that I have no doubt Mr. Anderson has.

To me this look like a varied group that will take all issues into account and provide our beloved institute with the best candidate for the job.

AS RP said: student body president has a seat at the GTAA Board of Trustees. Most choose to serve rather than appoint someone. Yes, students served on both the committees for Hewitt and Gailey. Students, since they are the reason for GT, serve on all committees. That's part of being a university that is pro-student.

No prob. Every now and then it pays to be a young alumnus instead of a an wise old fart. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugher.gif

Clough has a chance to begin to reunite a fractured GT alumni/friends fan base with the hiring of a new AD, and I would expect that he would solicit input from some influential supporters, but based on recent history who knows what might happen. I expect that the august selection committee's input will be pretty much limited to "Yes sir, Dr. Clough, sounds like the right man for the job."
