I intentially left off Womack's name as the headline, I do not want for it to be personal. The guy is a nice guy but, he has to go...the one guy that is an appologist and keeps defending him needs to stop.

I've said it before (dont intend to be an "I told you so guy" I just love GT and want us to be a top tier program)

I said from day one, that defense will define the Paul Johnson era 3 or 4 years out when we look back. I have no doubt, that his offense will work in the ACC and at this level. BOR had a great point though, it will NOT cut it with 250-270 lb. converted TE's, he will ultimately have to recruit the big (But still quick )boys to succeed.

I dont care if you can score at will on offense, if you cant stop the other team you will lose a lot of games and most certainly never win a championship.

With our offense in particular, it is very important to have a good defense because, as we have seen, if you can't stop the other team, (PJ commented on this point) it changes everything in his playcalling and what we run, if we are always playing from behind. (i.e. the Lsu and UM games are proof)

What we have been lacking for sometime now is that kickbutt DC (i.e. Van Gorder, Muschamp,Foster) that brings a nasty attitude to our defense and that coaches from the sideline. With a DC like that, you wouldn't see the lack of effort we saw last night, not to mention how clueless our guys were. They would have had their butts given to em over on the sideline. They would have been prepared also for the game, our guys didn't have a clue last night.

It does bother me somewhat that PJ hired Wommack, there was a reason Spurrier didn't want him. I will be optomistic though, and I hope that PJ will right the ship and get us a real DC at the end of the year. We have proven these last 2 years that we can attract good defensive recruits with Giff here, so we have hope. It is a shame though, as I like most here, were expecting bigger things this year. Hopefully PJ will not tolerate this and will make the changes soon.

GO JACKETS !!!

4 reasons why Wommack looked good last year:

1. Walker
2. Johnson
3 Richards
4. Morgan

Everybody that had any sense could see Dave Wommack was a bad call last season. I just don't understand how the entire rest of the staff, including CPJ, said nothing. Let him run the program in the ground? Blame it on a lack of talent? My Mom could've designed that D scheme last night over a hot kitchen.

I think one thing to investigate is what the rest of the coaching staff looks like. I know many of the assistants on offense came over with Johnson from Navy and I know there were a handful of assistants that remained from Gaileys group. Now this is what I'm asking you guys cause I don't know, were the assistants who stayed the assistants on defense or what? If so, would that mean Wommack was the only person we hired that wasn't from Navy or the previous staff?

I'm just suggesting that it might be possible we weren't able to convince someone better to come here. It's not like we offer the best athletes or the best recruiting (cause of the whole academics thing) and maybe even the whole speculative thing about our unorthodox offense scared off some defensive coordinators. Even with the success of last year we can't go and fire the DC after one year that wasn't that bad defensively.

This theory might be total BS and I'm making a lot of assumptions, so don't feel the need to restrain yourselves...

Yes, all the coaches who remained on the staff were defensive coaches: Giff, BJ, and Charles Kelly.

I don't believe that we couldn't get anybody better to come here. I think that CPJ didn't have much time to get a DC.

I know one thing is for certain, if the defense doesn't shape up from last night it would be extremely hard to justify Wommack staying.

True. If we average giving up 30+ a game like we have been for the past 6 games or so, then Wommack needs to find a new career path.

28.8 ~ 29 ppg over the last nine games.

The 1999 defense that gave up 30+ points in six of 12 games averaged giving up 32.8 ~ 33 ppg over that season.

I am NOT saying one way or another whether we should get rid of Wommack.

But, since the subject has come up, can one of you PJ historians share your thoughts on PJ's willingness to fire assistants who need firing? Is he more of a loyalist or will he go ahead and let someone go? Has he ever fired a coordinator before? Just wondering.

That would suck to get fired by PJ. (I guess a head coach and an AD would do it together.)

Whether it is justified or not, if we're talking about firing then we shouldn't count the first year stats. Just my opinion. However, right now we've given up 30 ppg and 420 ypg against FBS foes. It was one thing when last year, against UNC and LSU for example, where we gave up points on very short fields due to turnovers and such.
